Baltusrol will be a stern test for the 2005 PGA Championship. Expect the long hitters to dominate in what seems to be the format on Tour these days. The game of "Flog" is at its highest peak.
Yes, "Flog" is golf spelled backwards. Flog is pounding the tee ball as far as Pro V1x's and 460cc drivers will humanly allow, finding it, and wedge the ball to the green. Even with the two 500-yard plus holes #3 and #7, if you can smash it 350 off the tee you may only have a wedge in! For the long hitters like Tiger and Vijay, you will never again see them hit a 3,4 or 5 iron into a par four hole.
Baltusrol has hosted seven U.S. Opens and this par 70, 7,392 yard tree lined layout, with 25-30 yard fairways and patchy rough you would think could bring the best players in the world to their knees. Not so. The PGA staff always sets up the course fair. The greens will barely get to 11 on the stimp meter, unlike a U.S. Open. Therefore, I predicted a winning score of -9 under par.
Getting back to Tiger and Vijay. At this point of the golf season and the way Tiger is playing, Vijay is his only threat. Wasn't it awesome to watch Vijay on Saturday drill Tiger by eight shot in six holes at the Buick Open and then go on to coast to victory?
There is no Big Four or Big Five. It's the Big Two. Tiger and Vijay have separated their game and talent from the rest of the golfers in the world. They are clearly at a different level. They are the only two players to finish in the Top 10 in all three majors this year.
As for the Big others, Ernie Els is out after busting his knee sailing, the Goose won last week, but limped up the hills of Castle Pines playing 36 holes on the final day and complained of blisters and aches of pain. I do not see him challenging the field. The previous week winner is a bad bet the following event. Also, the fine final round of 81 at Pinehurst still looms. And then there is Phil Mickelson who has gotten worse as the season has progressed.
