If you haven't read my Masters Handicapping Preview, please do so before reading this report. Yes, changes to Augusta National holes 1,4,7,11,15 and 17 will make the course play longer tougher and force the majority of the field to attack the Masters or should we say play more defensively than ever before.
In selecting your matchups to wager on, yes you can look at long hitters vs. short hitters. Good current form vs. poor current form should still be at the top of your list. How can you bet against Phil Mickelson after a super performance winning the Bell South Classic? You can't! Phil is the best putter outside of 10 feet I have ever witnessed. And if your putting is off a bit, the Masters and Augusta National is not the place to fix it. Phil was more than impressive and I predict he'll finish in the Top 4 this week. Find players that are struggling with their putting and bet against them.
Any of the big five should be played in a matchup against other players in the field. However, I am shading Vijay Singh. He displayed poor form at the Players Championship where his body was moving all over the place. He had more moves than Kung Fu.
Fred Couples -115 vs. Lee Westwood
Couples has the streak of 21 consecutive cuts at the Masters working for us. Westwood missed the cut at the Masters in two of the L3Y and his best finish is a T44. Couples hits a nice high long iron needed on the Augusta greens. Freddy is considerably longer off the tee with 33.6% of his tee shots traveling 300 yards plus, while Westwood ranks in at only 13.5%. Freddy always a good ball striker ranks 46th in Greens in Regulation while Westwood is far behind on Tour ranking 162nd!
Tom Lehman -140 vs. Shigeki Maruyama
Ryder Cup Captain Tom Lehman should easily win this matchup. He hits a nice draw off the tee, is deadly with his iron play and has much better current form that the Shigekinator who did not play last week and withdrew after an opening round 78 at the Players. Shigeki has missed the cut in each of the L3Y at the Masters!
