The Memorial Tournament Picks, Predictions, Odds

The last two major winners won’t be taking part in the Memorial this week as Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas will skip this week’s PGA Tour stop. However, there is no shortage of star power at Muirfield. Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy have been installed as the co-favorites at 11-1 before Thursday’s tee off, while defending champion Patrick Cantlay is next in line at 17-1. Jordan Spieth, Cameron Smith, and Collin Morikawa highlight the list of the other top contenders looking to win Jack Nicklaus’ tournament.

Jack Nicklaus founded the Memorial Tournament in 1976. This event has always been played at Muirfield Village Golf Club outside of Columbus, Ohio, where the Golden Bear spent most of his childhood. It is a par 72 course that measures 7,533 yards, and the putting greens will be among the trickiest for golfers to tackle all year on the PGA Tour.

the MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT BEST BETS

  • Matthew Fitzpatrick to win the Memorial (+2800)
  • Collin Morikawa to Miss the Cut (+370)
  • Max Homa Top 10 Finish (+410)

MATTHEW FITZPATRICK TO WIN (+2800)

This might be the moment that Matthew Fitzpatrick has been waiting for since joining the PGA Tour. Fitzpatrick won five events on the European Tour before coming aboard in 2020, but he has yet to win a competition in golf’s highest tier.

Fitzpatrick has been sharp this season with six top ten finishes in 13 overall events. He has been at his best over the last month too with a T2 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship and a T5 placement at the PGA Championship. Fitzpatrick missed the cut here last year, but he finished third in 2020 after a final round 68. If he can shoot in the 60s on Thursday, his odds will drop as his Thursday rounds at Muirfield Village have been bad the last three years.

COLLIN MORIKAWA TO MISS THE CUT (+370)

It’s alright to raise an eyebrow over this pick considering Collin Morikawa is one of the six golfers with odds of less than 20-1 to win the Memorial. Morikawa started out this season strong with five straight T7 finishes (four of them top five finishes) at one point, but he has only looked good at Augusta National over the last three months.

Morikawa missed the cut at THE PLAYERS Championship and finished T68 at the Valspar Championship. He has been unable to crack the top 25 in his last four events either, finishing T26, T29, T55, and T40. Morikawa won the Workday Charity Open here last year, and he finished runner-up at this event last year too, but his recent form leaves plenty of doubt about his game. We saw Morikawa shoot eight over par here in 2020.

MAX HOMA TOP 10 FINISH (+410)

It’s been a breakout year for Max Homa. He won the Fortinet Championship at the start of the season and claimed the Wells Fargo Championship a few weeks ago, matching his number of career victories since joining the PGA Tour in 2014. Homa has largely been boom or bust, but he finished sixth at the Memorial last year and only has two rounds over par in the 10 he has played at Muirfield Village.
