It would be special. Another story in the long history of one of America's greatest athletes. That is, if Tiger Woods can win the U.S. Open at Oakmont on Father's Day.
A year ago, Woods missed the cut at the Open and admitted afterward that he was not ready to come back to golf after the death of his father. Now, just one year later, he finds himself within striking distance of his third U.S. Open title on a day he will no doubt be asking for some strength from the heavens.
Sure, there are plenty of other golfers in contention and even I can admit to wanting to see a first time major winning kissing the trophy on Sunday. But for anyone who is close with their father, you can't help but admit that a Woods win would be a story for the ages.
In the basketball world, the Spurs took home the NBA title this week after a 4-0 series sweep of the Cavaliers. Sadly enough for the NBA, the series finished with a record-low 6.2 television rating and 11 share on ABC. That was down 27 percent from last seasons finals and five percent from the previous low viewership. Even LaBron couldn't keep the public interested in this blowout.
I watched Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee swing and miss today and couldn't stop myself from laughing. No, he didn't miss a pitch thrown by Padres starter Chris Young, he missed with a right hook AT Chris Young. No boxing future for you Mr. Lee.
The Yankees had their nine game win streak snapped by the crosstown rival Mets on Friday night in Roger Clemens second start of the season. Clemens pitched well but it was the Yankess bats that let them down. Someone is going to need to remind the Bronx Bombers that the Rocket isn't going to win games for you if you don't score some runs.
I've almost forgot to put in my two cents about last weeks French Open. That's because the match was over before I finished my morning run. Congrats to Rafael Nadal anyway; I heard it was a great performance.
Eric Mangini canceled the Jets final workout of preseason mini-camp so his team could spend some "bonding time" together with members of the U.S. Military. In my opinion, its hard enough to get players to want to come to mini-camp in the first place that once you have them there, you should use all the time you have to your advantage. I'm not sure how the Miliary fits into that plan but I can't second guess a guy who might get Tony Soprano after me, if he's still alive.
