Well folks, it's finally here; the first installmant of J.J.'s blog. Now I know what you're thinking..and before you say it, let me start by saying that in no way do my opinions reflect the opinions of the rest of the vegas insider staff or corporate management. In fact, I'll probably get a constant earful of how I should be "politically correct" when I harp on players, coaches, franchises, and just about any other public figure who's fair game. Well, this is a blog, so if you want a nice article on how Peyton Manning grew up a student of the game, you're going to have to find another place to go. And if you want to know the actual definition of "blog," don't look it up in the dictionary; it's not there.
With each entry, I'll try and hit on some of the topics that are pressing issues in the sports world. Coaches being fired, players who don't give any effort, college students who don't go to class, pro golfers who complain there are too many tournaments, pitchers who think they should be paid more than $20 million a year to play 32 games, well...you get the point. But don't worry, I'll do it all with the intent of fun and sarcasm, although you can be sure I believe everything I write.
Let's start with highly ranked college teams playing at home against inferior opponents. Do these schools forget that there is a first half to every game? Why is it that a top 25 team seems to always be losing to Southwest North State by 10 at halftime only to come back and blow them out in the second half? Case in point...Florida was down by as many as 18 in the first half tonight to Alabama. With nothing more than some extra effort, the Gators outscored Alabama by 20 in the second to half to win the game by 9. This happens multiple times every night. So if you listen to nothing else I say, ever, listen to this: Bet the 2nd half line on a home team that is losing at halftime who is clearly better than their opponent. It's tough to track the numbers because its hard to agree on the definition of "clearly better" but I'd say it hits about 75% of the time.
Tonights hero: Taureen Green, guard Florida Gators - scored 20 points in the 2nd half to stretch Florida's win streak to 17. Tonights dog: Both Indiana and Purdue - for not navigating through a little snow to play your rival. And don't give me that "I don't want to fly" junk. Leave earlier and take a bus. Now I've got to wait till tomorrow. Imagine how the fans who sat outside the arena braving the cold feel.
