So much has happened since my last blog that I've needed to find time to sort through all the information that has come out in the past few weeks before writing down my thoughts. On one of the worst sports weekends of the year, I found the time.
First, let me start by saying that Michael Vick is going to be made an example of. At this point, it doesn't even matter if he is innocent or guilty since he's already guilty in the court of public opinion. The charges against him (and all the details that have come out along with them) are too hard to ignore and will in fact be the end of his career one way or another. The sponsors have stopped marketing his product and the NFL has pulled his jersey from the stores. It's over. Falcon fans, meet Joey Harrington.
On to Bud Selig and the Bonds home run chase. At this point, I don't care if Selig is there when Bonds breaks the record. In fact, I wish the guy would just come out and say something like "If I knew when it was going to happen, I'd be there but I can't spend all of my time following the Bonds circus." Then maybe people would understand.
And to our third commissioner of the week, David Stern, I pity what you have to go through now. You have the ultimate test ahead of you and that test involves restoring the respect of a league that many already say is on the decline. A referee placing wagers on games he officiates is possible the worst nightmare of any sport and for the NBA it has come true. If in fact it turns out that the outcome of any, even one game was altered because of gambling, even the gamblers will take to the streets in protest of the league. This is a bad, bad situation.
My hat goes off to Padraig Harrington who took home the British Open for the first time. The win was much needed by the Europeans and was even more special because at 25-1, I had picked him to win. Jim Furyk won the Canadian Open today and at 6-1 cashed my second winner in two weeks.
I don't know what they're putting in the coffee in the Chicago Cubs clubhouse but this team is rolling. They're going to make the playoffs, mark my words.
Watching Alex Rodriguez strike out and having Derek Jeter thrown out attempting to steal second on the same play on Saturday night really sums up the Yankees season.
San Jose won their third Arena Bowl in six years today. Yay?
College football season is right around the corner and I can hardly contain my excitement. That being said, I do not want to see one ESPN segmant that includes the word "Heisman" and a picture of Tim Tebow, period. If I see it again, my TV is going out the window.
Now that NFL camps have opened, its so nice to see those rookies in camp. That's the rookies that have actually signed contracts by now. What in the world are some of these agents, particularly those of quarterbacks drafted in the first round, thinking about from the time the draft is over until now? Get a deal done and get your boy under center now.
And finally, my sympathy goes to out the friends and family of Wake Forest head backetball coach Skip Prosser who passed away earlier this week. As a big ACC basketball fan, I could count endless nights watching Prosser patrol the sidelines and it's something the college basketball community is certainly going to miss.
