It's almost Friday; that six letter word that somehow makes most of us smile wide and think about surf, sun, and happy hour. And Friday also means that we're getting ready for another solid weekend of sports. At the top of the weekend watch list comes a full slate of college basketball on Saturday and the Accenture Match Play Finals on Sunday. If that's not enough for you, they'll be plenty of coverage of the NFL combine on the NFL Network (in HD I hope).
Let's recap a few college basketball things from this week. First of all, Memphis has clinched yet another CUSA basketball title. Shocker. Also note that Florida clinched at least a share of the SEC East. As predicted right here in my last blog, Wisconsin went to East Lansing and came home with a big "L" as they Badgers had too much Oden on the mind. And Butler, well, there's no excuse for losing at home to Loyola-Chicago. That's not going to help your seeding.
The NBA is back off its all-star layoff and already things seem strange. The Trailblazers have won two straight including a win on the road in L.A. against the Lakers. More importantly, Pat Riley came back to the bench just as Dwayne Wade found himself on it. His injury could cost Miami their season considering that the Heat are down by 23 at halftime tonight. Lovie Smith seems to be at a stalemate with the Chicago Bears on a contract extension. After taking the Bears to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years, is general manager Jerry Angelo really going to hang him out to dry? That would be like firing a coach who went 14-2 to hire Norv Turner. In other words...dumb.
