It just crept up on us, didn't it? By "it" I mean August and the start of NFL preseason. Don't get me wrong, I'm thrilled to have something on TV tonight to supplement my Sunday night "Entourage" routine but watching pre-season football can be about as boring as watching Bud Selig cheer for Barry Bonds and his "Aaron tying" home run.
The Hall of Fame game, while great in concept, couldn't be more of a waste of time. The Steelers and Saints have been in camp just a few days and neither team gets their fans on the sidelines. And no, don't give me that "the fans are in Canton for the Hall of Fame ceremony" crap. They're not.
The only fun part about tonights game is watching players like Pittsburgh's Brian Randall play mop up duty in the fourth quarter. That's because you'll probably never get to see a player like Randall on the sidelines for a "real" NFL game.
-And on to baseball
Congratulations go to Barry Bonds for his big home run last night. Now we can all hope he hits the next one as soon as possible so we don't have to hear about "the chase" anymore.
Don't look now but baseball in October just might be in store for New York Yankee fans. What seems like a version of "home run derby" has been going on in the Bronx for the last week and the Yankees are now just a game and a half out of the wild card spot.
-And to golf
Going into Sunday, Tiger Woods is just one stroke back in Akron at the WGC. Your best bet would be that when you turn on that TV to watch him today, he's in the bright red shirt and telling Rory Sabbatini to stare at his backside as he walks up the fairway. In case you've forgotten, earlier this season at the TPC, Sabbatini called Woods "more beatable than ever." He'll get his chance today.
As for the Women's British Open which is being played at St. Andrews, it didn't take much of an effort from what I believe is the world's best female golfer to pull away from the field. Lorena Ochoa currently holds a seven, yes seven stroke lead.
-And finishing up with controversy
While it isn't really a controversy, I would like to make it one. How brilliant is Steve Spurrier for voting the Duke Blue Devils number 25 in the coaches poll? Spurrier, who got his coaching start at Duke, claims that there is nothing wrong with his vote since Duke has yet to lose a game this season. You have to admit, the Head Ball Coach has a point.
It just goes to show that pre-season polls mean absolutely nothing and are used simply to create hype and conversation on the upcoming season. In my opinion, I don't want to see a poll until week 3 or 4, after the big schools like Florida and USC have actually played real opponents. I'm pretty sure I won't be getting my wish anytime soon so for your viewing pleasure, here are my top 3 in the preseason poll:
1. Hawaii 2. TCU 3. Southern Mississippi
None have lost a game and all have been picked by almost every publication to win their division. How do you think this poll would sit with the BCS? Discuss.
