A wild weekend in college basketball shook up the makings of an NCAA Tournament bracket. Florida fell for the second time in 8 days, this time at LSU, a team that some would consider on the bubble just for an NIT bid. Wisconsin also fell twice this week on the road in East Lansing and Columbus. There must be some kind of travel bug this week because North Carolina couldn't escape the wrath of the Terps.
With just 13 days left till selection Sunday, the bubble teams have been fighting it out for the last slots. In my opinion, Michigan State played its way into the tournament this week beating Indiana and Wisconsin while Maryland's victory over Carolina should seal the deal for them. Vanderbilt's wins over Florida and Kentucky puts the Commodores in a good position for a bid. Other big weekend winners on the watch list include Syracuse (at Providence), Texas Tech (over Oklahoma St.), Tennessee (at Arkansas), Creighton (over Wichita St.), and San Diego St. (over BYU),
Switching gears over to golf, I'm proud to say that I had Nick O'Hern at +350 topping Tiger Woods on Friday. It's almost painful the way that great match ended, by Woods forgetting to move a ball mark, but lets not forget the fact that Tiger spent most of the day in the Tucson desert off the tee. The loss ended Woods consecutive PGA tour win streak at 7. Oh, and Henrik Stenson won the tournament, as if you really cared.
Roger Clemens showed up for spring training at Astros camp last week so that he can spend some time with his son. If I remember correctly, Clemens threw at his son during training camp last year. Go home dad, he'll be fine on his own.
Or maybe Clemens should go to Tampa Bay and join the Devil Rays in their "yoga" workouts. Apparently, when you finish at the bottom of the league, management wants to shape things up. So now, at 8:00am, there's a cute blonde teaching Yoga at Devil Rays camp. How nice.
I haven't spent much time watching the NHL this year but I will admit that the highlights of this brewing Sabres/Senators rivaly is getting me excited. There was plenty of scoring and plenty of fistacuffs to be seen. Can you believe the fine that Sabres coach Lindy Ruff received from the league for putting his "tough guys" on the ice? Seriously, this is hockey?
How much did you enjoy watching the NFL Combine this weekend? Wasn't it great to see Marshall Faulk and Dick Vermeil in the booth chatting about "old times?" Didn't the quickness of the offense lineman's feet get you all warm inside? Yeh, me either. The only interesting part of the combine was the wide receivers who ran sub 4.4 40-yard dashes. What are they feeding these kids?
Briefly, on to tennis where Tommy Haas retained his Regions Morgan Keegan Championship by defeating Andy Roddick in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Add it to the list of Roddick's dissapointing efforts.
On a sad note, Washington Huskies football player Michael Houston was charged this week with second-degree taking of a motor vehicle without permission and driving while intoxicated. He stole a taxi. That gives "take a cab when you're drunk" a whole new meaning.
