Less than a week ago, I wrote an article on the conference tournaments declaring the favorites and the dark horses, essentially giving me 2 picks in each major tournament. As of today, I've got a chance to nail all 6 winners.
How dominant does Florida look in their run for an SEC title. From now on, if I see Noah clap his hands in the first two minutes of the game, I know the Gators are there to play. And just 3 months ago these same Gators dominated Ohio State in Gainesville. Now it looks as though Ohio State would be a bigger test with a fully recovered Greg Oden. Oden had a career high in rebounds in today's win over Purdue and his ability to change inside shots will no doubt change a game or two in the NCAA tournament.
On Sunday, we're going to get to see at least two great rematches. Wisconsin looks to avenge its one point loss at Ohio State just two weeks ago while North Carolina has a chance to win its season series over ACC tournament dark horse N.C. State. The third matchup could feature Kansas and Texas if the Longhorns can pull out a win today. The Jayhawks topped Durant's bunch by four earlier this season in Lawrence.
Congrats to Memphis, again. You've won a conference with no talent, again. You played five teams this season going to the big dance and went 2-3. You may get a number two seed, but you'll be exiting early.
Utah State's last second win over Nevada means that the WAC will become a 2-bid league. They join the Horizon, Atlantic-10 and Missouri Valley conferences in that category. The schools that may suffer from Nevada's letdown include West Virginia, Missouri State, Appalachian State, Old Dominion, Florida State and Drexel.
This blog's "dumb award" goes to Kentucky coach Tubby Smith. Listen up Teletubby; it didn't matter where you player stood, you would have won. Instead, your over-coaching cost the Wildcats the game. If you thought you were on the bubble before, you're really in trouble now. And I'll be betting against you this week. Anyone have an over/under on how many more days Tubby Smith lives in Lexington?
Runner up for the "dumb award" goes to Chris Simon. The only reason Simon is the runner up is because his dumb play didn't cost his team the game, it just cost him his career. What in the world did Ryan Hollweg do that you thought it would be OK to whack him upside the head with a hockey stick? Seriously man, not cool. You may want to call Zinedine Zidane and ask him how to deal with built up aggression after you get thrown out of your sport. And it doesn't matter if you don't actually get thrown out of the NHL, no one is going to sign you next season.
