I don't know about anyone else but I had a smile from ear to ear when the first football hit the air Thursday night. Now as we approach Saturday night prime time games, I reflect just a little on what I've seen this week..... First, the boxscore will lie a little when it talks about LSU and the six interceptions they had in their 45-0 win over Mississippi St. If you watched the game, you know that at least four of those ball were simply overthrown by a terrible MSU quarterback and landed right in the hands of the LSU secondary. I wasn't impressed with the Tigers offense either.
The biggest story of the first week is without a doubt the Michigan Wolverines and how they managed to loose a home game to a Division I-AA opponent. Appalachian State handed it to Michigan all day long and while the end of the game provided some thrills, they game wasn't nearly that close.
The real story of the Michigan/Appalachian State game should be the coaching. I'm not sure how Lloyd Carr will still have a job on Sunday but I am sure he should be fired, period. And as for Appalachian State, why in the world were they kicking a field goal on first down from the five yard line with :30 left. Oh ,and the ball was all the way on the left hashmark, a terrible angle. Yeh, give Michigan the ball back with time on the clock, what a great idea that was? If they blew that game, you could have fired their coach too.
It was an emotional day in Blacksburg but part of that emotion had to be frustration by the lack of offense from the Hokies. Scoring 10 points against a team from the bottom of CUSA is not going to get you my vote for the top 10. Sean Glennon was bad last year and he's picking up right where he left off. The Virginia Tech defense on the other hand is as good as advertised.
I only caught a little of the Miami Hurricanes performance today but it was enough to see that they have just a little bit of that "swagger" back in their step. I saw more emotion from the players in five minutes than I saw all of last season. Randy Shannon has this bunch ready to roll.
West Virginia should only have four plays in its playbook. They should be Patrick White run right, Patrick White run left, Steve Slaton run right, and Steve Slaton run left. They'd go undefeated, I'm convinced.
UCLA got off to a slow start but their offense really picked it up to Pac-10 standards in the second half. Ben Olsen's five TD passes is a good start to their season.
Notre Dame has three QB's and while it didn't look like it today, I'm betting they can all play well. What they really needed today was an offensive line that could block somebody. Maybe coach Charlie Weis should strap on a helmet?
Good effort today from Wisconsin QB Tyler Donovan who threw for 299 yards and 3 TD's against Washington State. His performance leads me to believe Wisconsin has a shot at the Big Ten title.
