Week Two is the most important week of the season to me. Teams have gotten their jitters out of the way and the typical week one mistakes are left behind. They can now focus on playing football and after today, we'll have a good idea which teams do it well.
I'm very interested in a few key games today. The first involves Notre Dame and their new freshman QB Jimmy Clausen. Throwing Clausen to the wolves at Penn State is either going to make Charlie Weis look like a genious or it's going to kill the season. To put the Irish on his shoulders today is alot to ask from an 18 year old kid.
A second game I'll be tuning into is UAB and Florida St. While this game should be a sleeper, I'll be watching the Florida State offense to see if they can get it going against a weaker opponent. If they can't, there's trouble brewing in Tallahassee.
Miami heads to Oklahoma and after the game we'll know if Randy Shannon has made a difference down in South Beach. The Canes don't need to win the game, just play hard and keep it close and I'll be convinced that last seasons performance was the head coaches fault and not the players.
While LSU blew out Mississippi St. last week, I wasn't that impressed with their offense. With Virginia Tech's defense coming down to the Bayou today, keep a close eye on the performace of LSU QB Matt Flynn. If they struggle today, it could be a sign of things to come in the SEC.
Also on my radar is the South Florida/Auburn game. I'm curious to see how South Florida QB Matt Grothe plays against one of the nations top defenses in a night game on the road. Consider this forshadowing for the Thursday night matchup later this season at Rutgers.
