It wasn't a wild Saturday but we learned a whole lot about the landscape of college football. The Pac-10, ACC and SEC are up, the Big-12 and Big Ten are down. And the Big East, well, I still only consider it half a conference. The "Stomp in the Swamp" showed up just how electric the Florida Gator offense is. While Tennessee isn't the top defense in the SEC, Tim Tebow made them look like a high school team. To quote a prominant sports writer, "Tebow didn't just pass his first test, he aced it, flicked his #2 pencil at the teacher and strutted out of the classroom in front of 90, 707 convinced fans looking the a valedictorian." And before the Gators left the field, they gave us a glimpse of the future as QB Cameron Newton looked like "Mini Tebow" as he found the end-zone.
Looking back on Thursday nights game between West Virginia and Maryland, I've decided that its OK for the Mountaineers to add two plays to their four play playbook. Devine right and Devine left can now be added to Slaton right, Slaton left, White right, and White left for a total of six players that can take this team to a national championship game.
It's tough to be a Notre Dame fan right now. What was really hard was watching Charlie Weis pull Jimmy Clausen from the game. Don't you think the kid could have used some extra reps?
I've been focusing on the FSU offense and while they were able to win at Colorado last night, I think they took a step backward in their development.
USC is still the number one team in the country and last night they reminded us why. The Trojans really laid into the Children of the Corn on prime time TV. No more east coast bias but watch out for Oregon.
Ohio State really impressed me in the second half of their game at Washington. The Buckeye defense will carry this team but it seems the offense may be coming along quicker than expected. The beat a good Husky team.
Kentucky QB Andre Woodson should be a first round draft pick. This guy is the real deal as his Wildcats beat a more talented Louisville team. He made Heisman candidate Brian Brohm look like the second best QB on the field.
Other notes: Hawaii returns to the islands still undefeated. Wisconsin should never struggle with a school like The Citadel but at least they didn't lose like their Big-10 counterparts Minnesota did to FAU. Auburn should be embarassed after a second straight home loss, Iowa should join them on the embarassment line after losing to rival Iowa State, and they can both line up right behind UCLA.
Roll Tide.
