Sitting in my "office" on Saturday, it seemed that my jaw dropped every few minutes as the final scores flashed on the 10 TV's around the room. Another upset in the books.
We can start by wondering how Colorado took down number four ranked Oklahoma and finish with Auburn kicking their way out of Gainesville with a win over Florida. Any way you slice it, it was certainly "Upset Saturday" as the faces of young students around the country at top ranked schools were filled with shock.
And it wasn't just Saturday on the grid iron but Sunday as well. How many people really thought Arizona would deliver a win for its home crowd over Pittsburgh? Did you really think Kansas City would take San Diego down? How about Cleveland sending the Ravens back to Baltimore with a big "L" on their chest?
And the surprises don't stop with football. How about the Mets blowing a 7 game lead with just 17 games left and being knocked from the playoffs by the Phillies? Or Canadian golfer Mike Weir beating the world's number one player Tiger Woods in Canada at the President's Cup?
A few other observations from this week:
I strongly suggest reading this article http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10365032 regarding college basketball players around the country. It is truely an eye opening piece.
Ron Zook finally has a signature win at Illinois after topping Penn State this weekend. I always thought Zook got a raw deal at Florida and in my opinion, this win that makes the Illlini 2-0 in the Big Ten validates that statement.
The Arizona State Sun Devils 5-0 start has featured an offense that hasn't scored less than 33 points in any of its games this season. Dennis Erickson can flat out coach with the best of em' and I'm looking forward to November 22nd when USC comes to the desert for a night game.
I was a little suprised to find South Florida at number six in the AP polls today. Does that mean that the voters think there are only five teams in the country that would beat the Bulls?
What happened to the St. Louis Rams? A team with seemingly so much fire power on offense can't get in the end zone. The entire team seems to be hurt and Jeff Wilkens, normally a very reliable kicker, missed a 28-yarder in Dallas.
The once so mighty Baltimore Ravens defense failed to record a sack against Cleveland and has now allowed 23 points or more in three of its first four games.
Brian Griese throwing the ball 52 times in a game could not have been Lovie Smith's gameplan coming into this weekend. You could argue that Griese's three INT's, two coming at the goal line and another being returned for a TD, cost the Bears the game. How does Rex Grossman look now?
Congrats to Brett Farve for passing Dan Marino for the all-time TD record...and for taking his Green Bay Packers to a 4-0 record.
