Congrats to the SEC conference which has successfully fined the University of Kentucky for failing to prevent its fans from rushing the field after beating number one ranked LSU in Lexington Saturday.
I mean, lets face it, its not like the SEC could have been unsuccessful. Kentucky had no choice but to accept the fine just like they had no choice but to watch their fans mob the players at midfield. What in the world could the University have done differently? Maybe they should have had administrators walk section to section and kindly ask students to clap like they were on the 18th green at Augusta after winning one of the biggest games in Kentucky history? Maybe they should have theatened bodily harm to anyone that sets foot on the grass?
Sounds dumb doesn't it? It is. These students were coming to midfield even if you arrested every last one of them after. In fact, I'm now wondering how much revenue is created for the conference simply by fining its schools for watching their students have fun. It happens in football, it happens in basketball and its the signature on the dotted line of a big win. Fans rush the field, fans rush the court. The SEC should learn to deal with it. I'm pretty sure the president of Kentucky will be smiling when he hands this check over and I guarantee he'll have a picture of the students on the field in his office by Monday night.
