I wonder what the Notre Dame athletic department feels like knowing that they have six more years left on Charlie Weis contract. Weis decided not to attempt a game winning field goal and went for it on fourth and seven late in the fourth quarter against Navy, a team Notre Dame had beaten 43 straight times. The Irish didn't get the first down and they didn't get the win. After the triple OT loss in which Notre Dame was stopped on a two point conversion, Weis was asked by NBC's sideline reporter what he felt the difference in the game was. Weis simply replied "two points." Maybe the math department has a job for him? The University of Miami should be embarassed after losing at home, in the Orange Bowl, to N.C. State. In the 19-16 OT loss, QB Kirby Freeman was 1-14 with three INT's. Absolutely pathetic.
I don't care what you think of Kansas, they're 9-0 after a blowout of Nebraska in Lawrence on Saturday. There are still four more Big 12 games on the schedule for the Jayhawks and should they continue their win streak, and one of those games will likely be against Oklahoma, they deserve a shot at the national championship. Personally, I think they'll finish 11-2 and ranked somewhere around 14. Still a very impressive season.
The first Saban bowl left the Alabama faithful stunned. With just over two minutes left in a tie game, Alabama had a chance to drive the field and at least attempt a game winning field goal. Instead, QB John Parker Wilson fumbled, LSU picked it up, and eventually Jacob Hester ran it in for the Tigers second TD in three minutes for a 41-34 win. After the game, the LSU players awarded the game ball to coach Les Miles.
Tim Tebow deserves an invite to New York. The kid can flat out play and as a sophomore, could be the best player in college football. Don't expect him to ever play on Sunday's, he's doesn't have the arm for it, but do expect to see him in another national championship game. Florida returns almost their entire team next season and should they make the necessary developments on defense, they will find themselves playing for a championship in their home state in 2009.
And speaking of the Gators, have you seen Percy Harvin run? If you missed him, you're not the only one. It seems most defenders can't seem to find him either. Harvin had 11 carries for 113 yards and 9 catches for 110 yards in yesterday's win over Vanderbilt. That's over 11 yards gained everytime Harvin touches the ball. He is the second coming of Reggie Bush.
On to the NFL, today's New England/Indianapolis game has the feeling of an early Superbowl. In what should be a high scoring shootout, the difference in this game will be the secondaries of both teams. Bob Sanders will win or lose this game for the Colts.
A-Rod wants how much money? $350 million seems to be an awful lot to give a guy to swing a baseball bat. I know he's one of the best ever, and I know he helps bring revenue into whatever club he's on, but that kind of number is astronomical. There are rumors swirling about him wanting a piece of television rights and stadium naming rights along with merchandise sold with his name on it. I challenge all MLB owners to keep his contract in perspective and pay him for one thing only, playing ball.
College Basketball tips off this week which means it's real money making time for professional gamblers. Of all the sports on the board in Vegas, college basketball is the easiet for a professional to make his living. I highly sugget using the advice of VI's finest, including myself, if you want to find yourself in the green come March.
