Let's start with my blog from two weeks ago where I stated that Tim Tebow will win the Heisman trophy. If you spent anytime watching the Florida vs. Florida State football game on Saturday, you saw exactly why. Tebow accounted for 5 TD's in the blowout win for the Gators and tied the NCAA Division I record for most rushing TD's in a season with 22. I promise I'm not going to say it again (I really don't need to) and I'm not going to drill it into anyones skull but you can quote me; "Tim Tebow deserves the Heisman."
I'm not a huge fan of Big-12 football mostly because I feel the conference is consistantly overrated and up until this season really only consisted of two schools, Texas & Oklahoma. After last nights Missouri/Kansas tilt, I may have changed my mind. These teams were just as good as any other I've seen this season and even though Kansas' dramatic comeback fell short, this was one of the most entertaining games I've seen all season. While I still believe Oklahoma will win the Big-12 title, I think they're going to have to earn it this year.
And as exciting as that Missouri/Kansas game was, it still didn't come close to the excitement of SEC football. Two multiple OT games in two days shook up the BCS, changed the participants in the SEC championship game, and made the heads of SEC athletic directors spin wildly throughout the night. The regular season finishes with 10, that's right 10 SEC teams eligable for a bowl.
Let's start with Arkansas' upset of LSU in Baton Rouge which reminds me why the SEC is the best conference in football. Knocking LSU out of the top spot in polls and likely the BCS Championship game, Razerback RB's Darren McFadden and Felix Jones put on a show that shocked the Tiger faithful. Just 12 hours after the game, many Arkansas fans are reminding the athletic department that despite beating the number one team in the country on the road, coach Houston Nutt has failed to deliver Arkansas an SEC Championship and are calling for his exit.
And up in Lexington, Kentucky just a day later, another SEC coach likely saved his job by bringing Tennessee back to the SEC title game. A four OT win by the Vols over Kentucky, a team they have now beaten 15 straight times, will be enough for Phillip Fulmer to remain on the sidelines another season, something that seemed more than improbable back in September after a 1-2 start.
And Alex Rodriguez really needed the opportunity to earn another $30 million? Here's an update to last weeks blog where I talked about the Yankees and A-Rod needing to find a way around some major league baseball rules in order to pay him some extra cash for his home run performances. They found it.
Under the contract, Rodriguez would receive $6 million each for tying the home run numbers of Willie Mays (660), Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and Barry Bonds (762), and an additional $6 million for breaking Bonds now tainted record. The Yankees will designate each achievement as a "historic event" and Rodriguez will receive the additional money for added personal appearances and signed memorabilia for the club. $30 million for a few autographs and a birthday party or two doesn't sound so bad, does it?
In case you haven't noticed, college basetball is in full swing and we've already had some classic contests. Without rattling off the long list of early season upsets (Xavier over Indiana, Virginia over Arizona, Gardner-Webb over Kentucky just to name a few), I can tell you that in my experience, there is more consistant play coming from the non-BCS conferences and I predict that we're going to see alot more upsets in the coming weeks.
In golf news, the event in Dubai will be moved to the final spot on the European Tour calendar in 2009 with a purse of $10 million, which doesn't include appearance fees and bonuses to star players. Raise your hand if you think you just paid too much to fill your car with gas. Now aren't you happy to see our oil-rich friends using their financial proceeds for such a great cause?
And in other golf news, Phil Mickelson, who advocates a shorter PGA season so he can have an offseason just spent two weeks playing tournaments in Asia. "Now that my family is older, my kids are 8, 6 and 4, I will try to play more tournaments overseas and use those trips as educational weeks for my family," Mickelson said. How about he just takes the $2 million appearance fee and stops with the dumb reasoning? We can all accept that he needs the money.
