That's right, the wait is over. I have waited 14 weeks to write this blog entry and its time for me to unleash my true feelings about the BCS on paper for all to read. They'll be no holding back as I give a piece of my mind to everyone involved.
Let's start with the obvious and bold statement: It's time for a playoff. No more excuses, I'm tired of hearing them all. No "what happens to the Bowl games?" No "the regular season won't have the same meaning." No "the president's don't want to see the season extended any longer." No one is listening anymore. What the fans of college football want is to see the best football of the season played between the best teams and preferably for as as many weeks as possible. Period.
So lets talk about what it all boils down to, money. At this point, its apparent that the NCAA is worried about one thing and money is it. They're worried about the fallout of bowl games, TV contracts, and other revenue type agreements like sponsorships. What they're not worried about it the best way to crown a national champion and that's just plain wrong.
This season more than ever, we're going to see the BCS thrown into turmoil thanks to losses by Missouri and West Virginia on the final Saturday of the season. Could Georgia reach a title game without winning its conference championship? LSU has to be considered after winning that conference and having both losses this season coming in OT. Will Ohio State make its second consecutive trip to a title game by not playing one team inside the top 20 of the AP poll? Does Oklahoma get a shot after beating the number one team in the country in the final week? How about Virginia Tech which won the ACC, aren't they as deserving as anyone else? Someone want to make a case for USC, go ahead. West Virginia did win the Big East even thoug they lost the final game. Oh yeh, and Hawaii sits undefeated at 12-0.
The above paragraph shows exactly why we need a playoff. We now have eight teams all that have a legitimate argument on why they should be invited to New Orleans. Wouldn't it be nice to see these eight teams play it out over the next three or four weeks? That's more TV time for college football, more TV ad revenue, just as much sponsorship money, and the season would still end before January. You can even have those stupid Meineke Car Care Bowls you love so much. Don't forget that at the end of all of this the best two teams would play in a game to determine the best team in the country! What a concept!
We have a system that is severly flawed. Now is the time to fix it. So once again, I'll be one of many that plead to the NCAA to install a playoff season so that we no longer have to sift through this BCS mess.
