This week can only be defined as "The Quiet Before the Storm." Although the NBA and NHL are in full swing with playoff races heating up, I can't help but feel that something is missing tonight. It's college basketball.
I spent Monday recouping from my visit to Vegas and I got my fill last night with two great NIT games (I went 1-0-1) but after an episode of "Friday Night Lights" on NBC tonight, I'm reduced to the McDonald's All-American game. The problem with the game is that its more about the players than it is the sport.
My friends tell me not to worry, that Saturday will be here before I know it and the Final Four will provide me with another few hours of entertainment. Sunday starts baseball season and combined with the Shell Houston Open (without the stars) I'll get through the weekend. Then the NCAA Finals on Monday. I guess I'll be OK.
A few notes:
First, a thank you goes out to the staff at the Mandalay Bay Sports and Racebook for your hospitality this past weekend. You guys do one heck of a job. Sorry I had to walk away with your money.
Another thank you goes to the PGA Tour which has decided to make the field for Tiger Woods tournament 120 players strong. While that number is a compromise between several parties, I believe it's more than fair and will provide great entertainment on Fourth of July week in D.C.
A pre-mature thank you goes from Florida Gator fans to Billy Donovan who I know will turn down the Kentucky job when its offered to him. I'd consider Kentucky a step down at this point and let's face it, the man is going to get PAID to live in the Florida sun. No better job in the country if you ask me.
Congratulations to Mia Hamm and husband Nomar Garciaparra who had twin girls Tuesday. Hamm gets very little face time considering for what she has done for the sport of soccer in America and this was a good chance to give her a mention.
And today's dummy, Houston's Jeff Van Gundy. Van Gundy recently suggested that all NBA teams be involved in the lottery that comprises the first picks in the NBA draft. Seriously, this may rank right up there with one of the dumbest comments any individual in any sports coaching or management role has ever said. What in the world would make a man think this? Boston "allegedly" dumped a game? Who cares? They stink. Give em' the number one pick, they need it.
And last but not least, Yankees GM George Steinbrenner's daughter Jennifer Swindal filed divorce papers this week against husband Steve Swindal. The man was tagged to be the future head of the New York Yankees but its not questionable whether or not he'll remain in that line. It may be a little premature but Jennifer, call me..........
