What better time than Christmas Eve to look back at 2007 and find out what I did right. Of course, I'm sure I'll find just a few things I did wrong. Let's take a look back at just a few of the quotes in my past blogs: Why I'm smart:
March 11th. "And if you want a winner, look no further than last years champions. Nothing, and I mean nothing, has convinced me that when the Gators are healthy and play to their ability, they can be beat. Yes, they lost games this season but everyone loses a few games along the way. Give me Florida against any team in the field in a game at a neutral site and I'll take Donovan's boys any day."
March 24th. "Word out of South Florida is that University of Miami QB Kirby Freeman looks good. The problem is that he's throwing against his own defense. Now what does that say?"
April 15th. "OK, I'm gonna have to say it. Why is the NFL playing a regular season game in London?;Not only is it putting extra travel on the Dolphins and Giants, but its giving Dolphin fans one less chance to see their team play this season. And it's taking the home field advantage away from Miami. How is that fair? Aren't the Dolphins bad enough that they should get all the home field advantage they can get?"
April 30th. "How sad is it that some players who would be considered in the elite level of the league are being traded for fourth round draft picks? Insert the newest New England Patriot Randy Moss. If Moss can stay happy, the Patriots are the front runner for the Super Bowl. If he causes locker room problems, this move will be the worst in New England history. Either way, it amazes me that the guy could only be dealt for a fourth round draft pick."
April 30th. "And of course baseball season is in full swing and the New York media has finally decided to leave Alex Rodriguez alone. That's because despite Rodriguez's incredible start, the Yankees are already 6 1/2 games out of first place, last in the AL East, and have the third worst record in baseball. New target; manager Joe Torre."
August 12th. "The Dolphins offense is bad. Very bad. If I were Trent Green, I would ask to be taken out of every game now and save myself what will likely be another concussion. If their offensive line doesn't learn how to block in the next few days, Green will be down and out before he even sees the regular season schedule."
September 9th. "At this point, I feel that its safe to say that Lloyd Carr will have quite a few coaching offers at the end of the season but one of them certainly won't be from Michigan."
And why I'm not so smart:
July 29th. "College football season is right around the corner and I can hardly contain my excitement. That being said, I do not want to see one ESPN segmant that includes the word "Heisman" and a picture of Tim Tebow, period. If I see it again, my TV is going out the window."
August 12th. "The Cleveland Browns flipped a coin to determine their starting QB in the opening preseason game. What that really meant was that it didn't matter whether Charlie Frye or Derek Anderson took snaps because they'll both be on the sidelines by October in favor of rookie Brady Quinn."
So I've had a few good calls and a few bad calls. We all do, right? How about some of my best calls at the book this season.
1. Nailing the Trifecta at the Kentucky Derby 2. Nick O'Hern +350 over Tiger Woods at the Accenture Match Play Championships 3. Florida Gators to win their second straight NCAA BKB Championship 4. Padraig Harrington at 25-1 and Lorena Ochoa at 5-1 to win the Men's and Women's British Opens (among 11 other golf tournament winners) 5. The Colts and the 'under' in the Superbowl 6. 16-2 on the first day of the NCAA Basketball Tournament
I can only hope that 2008 brings me the same success at this past season. Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season...
