I couldn't smile wider as Tiger crumbled down the stretch on Sunday at the Masters. It gave him a sense of, well, human nature. That he's not invincible and that he too, can make mistakes. Watching Zach Johnson finish up his round was anti-climatic but the expression on the young man's face as he won his first Masters was priceless. Watching a speechless Phil Mickelson put the jacket on Johnson was a moment I won't soon forget.
I must admit that is was very nice of the tournament committee to put some extra water on the greens Saturday night as to not embarass the world's best golfers on golf's holiest day. After three days of torture, scores fell back into line with other tournaments which is to say that some players finished under par and there were even a few eagles to be had. It makes me wonder what would have been if the wind kept howling and the greens rock hard and ice-like. Hmmmmmmm
While the Masters were wrapping, baseball season was enjoying its first full weekend of the season. The most exciting part of the baseball weekend was watching the Indians and the Mariners try and battle through a snowstorm that left Cleveland buried and forced the cancelation of several days worth of games. Note to the commissioners office; no more games outdoors in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Chicago, or Milwaukee in the first two weeks of the season. Sincerely, the weather man.
It's almost time for playoff hockey which means that its possible I just might start watching some.
As I'm still gloating over my beloved Florida Gators taking home the NCAA Basketball title, again, a former Gator is on the move as South Alabama coach John Pelphrey has been recruited by the University of Arkansas to coach the Razerbacks basketball team next season. There must be something to this Rick Pitino/Billy Donovan bloodline.
There were plenty of other coaching moves this week including Jeff Bzdelik leaving Air Force for Colorado and John Beilein leaving Morgantown behind for the maize and blue of Michigan. I wouldn't be able to call myself much of a blogger if I didn't mention Billy Gillespie taking over the Kentucky program and Bob Huggins moving to West Virginia.
Another reason you have to love the University of Florida is because their president, Bernie Machen, is pushing hard for a college football playoff. It's nice to see that even after watching the current system work for his school, Machen is still willing to admit that the system is flawed and needs fixing, fast. He's acting now so the BCS won't have time to extend its television contracts and force the system to stay put beyond 2010. Someone once told me that spending time in Gaineville works wonders on the mind....
Washington coach Tyrone Willingham stopped just short this week of naming freshman Jake Locker the Huskies new signal caller. It's likely Locker will throw his first pass in the opening game at Syracuse. The role of Notre Dame freshman QB Jimmy Clausen is still yet to be determined.
Speaking of QB's, its nice to see former starters David Carr (to the Panthers) and Joey Harrington (to the Falcons) land backup roles. Of the two, my money is on Harrington seeing playing time at some point this season although neither should be anywhere near a field in my opinion.
That's all for now....
