On Jackie Robinson Day, I realize that I can't possibly know what today means to many Americans. My best friends come from all over the world and their skin isn't necessarily the same color as mine. I respect people's opinion on religion and politics. I guess not everyone is like me? But onto the week in sports. First, I have to give congrats to my friend Brittany Lincicome who came back from a four shot deficit to win the Ginn Open today in Orlando. The Ginn organization is ready to become a premier part of the golf landscape for both the LPGA and the PGA with the centerpiece being their three course master planned community near Disney World.
I actually caught five minutes of the Red Wings/Flames game today. I turned it off to watch the Ginn Open. What does that tell you?
The New York Yankees already have half of their starting rotation on the DL which is why it was a shame to see beloved closer Mariano Rivera blow the game tonight by giving up a ninth-inning home run to Marco Scutaro. But no matter how many saves Rivera blows, New Yorkers will still love him. Think they feel the same way about home-run leader Alex Rodriguez?
Everyone is raving about the play of University of Florida QB Tim Tebow in the spring game. When their finished raving about Tebow, they move on to the receivers. The only players not getting rave reviews are on the defensive side of the ball. What does that tell you?
What's the holdup for Greg Oden? I mean, this kid can't seriously be considering coming back to Ohio State to play college ball when he's already the number one pick in the NBA draft, can he? And please tell me Michael Conley Jr. isn't considering staying also. Who's advising these kids? Maybe the NCAA should allow agents to work with them?
OK, I'm gonna have to say it. Why is the NFL playing a regular season game in London? Not only is it putting extra travel on the Dolphins and Giants, but its giving Dolphin fans one less chance to see their team play this season. And it's taking the home field advantage away from Miami. How is that fair? Aren't the Dolphins bad enough that they should get all the home field advantage they can get? This trip could be a sticking point in upcoming contract negotiations with Trent Green.
Don't worry, I really do get it. I understand wanting to take this league international. Football is a great sport and I would love to see if played all over the world but if you're going to try and gain support from England, maybe you should play the first game of the season there. That way, they can get into the sport when the season isn't already halfway over!
