I could have sworn it was April Fool's Day when I turned on sportscenter this morning and heard that Chicago Bears LB Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 for wearing an unapproved baseball cap at the Superbowl. Now the NFL has done some things out of character in the past, I'll give them that. But I'm pretty sure that wearing your own hat isn't a violation of the new conduct policy.
Has the NFL come so far as to say you can't wear your own clothing unless its made by one of our pre-approved sponsors? Is this "Vitamin-World" hat worn by Urlacher at Superbowl media day (which he may or may not have been paid to wear) important enough to fine someone double what most Americans make in a year? Let us not forget that media day is a joke anyway.
This is a sad day in sports. A day that confirms what we all already knew; that the need for corporations to make money has outweighed the importance of character in sports.
In other news, the Lakers finally clinched a spot in the playoffs. Now they can go be embarassed by the Suns. But It won't be as embarassing as when the number eight seed, the Golden State Warriors, knock off the mighty Mavericks of Dallas.
Mark Buehrle threw a no-hitter last night for the White Sox. The best part of this event was when his teamates soaked him after the game during his post-game interview. Wouldn't it be great if our star pitcher caught a cold after the game? At least on one in my fantasy league would complain, Buehrle is a free agent.
The NCAA has decided to recommend a ban on text-messaging. Apparently some of the recruits couldn't handle the phone bills. They're also going to impose new limitations on email even though in most cases, that's free.
And in serious news, the bribary charge against a Toledo running back accused of participating in a point-shaving scheme. has been dropped, for now.
That's all from the early AM.....have a good one kiddies.
