As the NBA season rounds out and the playoff match-ups start to become clearer there is still a major jam in the middle of the Western Conference. On Wednesday if things go a certain way there could actually be a four-way tie between the #3 and the #6 spots in the Western Conference.
This is what would need to happen:
Houston beats the Clippers at home. Phoenix beats Portland at home. The Jazz beat the Spurs in San Antonio.
All four teams would end the season at 55-27. The Jazz would be guaranteed a top 4 spot based on winning the Northwest Division, but the tiebreaking procedures will have to be brought out to figure out the match-ups and the home court advantage. Utah beat Houston on Monday to win the head-to-head series but if the Jazz lose in San Antonio for the 18th straight time on Wednesday the significant home court edge would be lost. The defending champion Spurs will have great incentive to win on Wednesday as the Spurs would likely end up in the #6 spot going to Utah if all four teams are tied. Phoenix won three out of four with San Antonio in the regular season so the Suns would have an edge in the tie-breaking procedures even though the Suns lost two of three to both Utah and Houston. We’ll see what happens but expect a hard fought playoff intensity type game between San Antonio and Utah on Wednesday.
