I would just like to make a brief statement about the Miguel Cotto and Zab Judah fight that went down under the lights of Madison Square Garden this past Saturday (Jun. 9).
While many may have missed this classic brawl between two fighters who seemed as focused as any other fighters in recent memory, let me be the one to say that this was exactly the bout boxing needed and continues to need more of.
It wasn’t until the mid rounds of the fight that Miguel Cotto began wailing away at Judah’s body with devastating consequences (or until Judah’s body caught up with the pain and agony of those laser guided hooks). Aside from the low blows that Cotto threw during the opening rounds of the fight and a head but which cracked both fighters (more damage to Cotto), this was a bout that strayed away from the usual Judah circus.
Without recapping too much, Judah showed as much heart as I have ever seen him display. He was overpowered, and to be honest, outclassed, but never-the-less continued to display honor and a will that many never thought Judah had. It was a shame that this fight had to be purchased for $44.95, as I truly believe more viewers should have been treated to a regular cable showing. .
Boxing needs more toe-to-toe action that took place in MSG that night, and although Cotto is the real man to beat in the welterweight division, props to Judah for the heart he displayed.
In conclusion, Judah is now looking at a cut in the class of competition that he will face in the future. He’s had plenty of chances to leave his print in the wet concrete slab of boxing, and I believe that if his career is not over in the immediate future, it sure is on the way down. With that said, I hope professional boxing can continue fielding more high octane fights, which will provide a younger generation with the action that many crave for.
