MOSLEY-COTTO AT MSG THOUGHTS

By Joshua Jacobs

I just wanted to touch on the Mosley-Cotto fight that unfolded on Nov. 10 inside Madison Square Garden. I know it’s been a while since I posted a blog, but this fight just made the hair rise on the back of my neck. It was that good.

First off, hats off to “Sugar” Shane Mosley. This guy still has what it takes to adjust to younger fighters, he throws the bomb as good as ever and he’s just a straight up competitor.

Then there’s Miguel Cotto, the undefeated 27-year-old from Puerto Rico. This guy is a machine and while his defense can be suspect at times, he takes a beating and keeps on ticking.

As for the fight, it had me on the edge of my seat from round one to 12. Mosley refused to let Cotto run away with the fight, and Cotto actually exercised one of his best defensive efforts that I have witnessed from him.

The biggest weakness that hurt Mosley was no defensive answers to Cotto’s haymaking right-hand that landed on a consistent basis. In another observation, Cotto seemed to drop those hands a little more then half-way through the fight, allowing Mosley to land damaging body shots (an equalizer in the match).

All in all, this fight was something special. It was the epitome of why boxing is not only America’s past time but continues to find places in true boxing fans’ hearts. Sure, it might have lost a large demographic of viewers (especially the younger generation), but that doesn’t mean it lost its excitement.

I just felt the need to give both warriors their fun in the sun. Mosley for looking like the young kid that captivated a list of titles in years past and Cotto for resembling one of boxing’s elite competitors. This was Cotto’s toughest fight of his career, and with the win in MSG this guy has found a home in professional boxing around the world.

I just can’t wait to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Ricky Hatton this December. Another gift that should keep on giving!
