CLEMENS, NO THANK YOU

By Joshua Jacobs

I’m not trying to vent in this blog but I do feel the need to get the Roger Clemens addition off my chest. Sure, it’s been argued by the main stream media, fans across the country and at your local bar or hangout, but I’m just sick of the attention already.

The Yankees need pitching (bullpen as well) in a major way, but Clemens seems like an unlikely candidate as the one man to turn around an organization this deep in the sinking hole. He’s arrogant, overpaid, selfish, committed to other things then baseball and overpaid (did I mention that one already).

The reception that Yankee fans greeted Clemens too on Sunday was of a mixed variety. I’m pretty sure every New York fan (not counting Met fans obviously) wants to see their Yanks recover from a pitching nightmare, but is this all the “Boss” could muster up with the deep pockets that keep this team and its dream of attaining another World Championship alive? So much for that deep farm team that was supposed to be the new strategy in Joe Torre and Brian Cashman’s arsenal. I’m not knocking Cashman for the injury bug but there has to be another way then the 44-year-old veteran.

The Clemens situation doesn’t just affect the Yankees either. How about the whole of baseball? How will Dontrelle Willis and Johan Santana feel about restructuring contracts now that they see a Clemens making concessions in his contract to travel away from the team (and the unbelievable $28 million payday), except on starting days? This gives reason for special treatment and why should Clemons be the exception if not the example?

I don’t know what to say? As a diehard Yankee fan who’s lost the steam and much of the interest in the 2007 squad, I feel disrespected and embarrassed to have a trader who left the Yanks in 2003 on short retirement, only to accept another lucrative deal in Houston. I’m not taking anything away from the “Rocket’s” achievements, but stay in Houston where you belong, playing catch with the family. Yes, he may end up making an impact on the team, but is this the guy you want playing on your club whenever the heck he wants?
