Brian Edwards - About Me

Brian Edwards covers football, basketball and the UFC with a special emphasis on SEC football and SEC hoops. He has handicapped for VI since 2002.

Brian is a 1998 graduate of the University of Florida. After working as a sports writer in the Atlanta area for nearly two years, Edwards joined Vegas Insider in March of 2000.

Brian is a regular guest on radio shows all across the country. During football season, he is a weekly guest on the The Paul Howard Show in Las Vegas, The Sharp and Benning Show on 1620 The Zone in Omaha and the Chris Vernon Show in Memphis. Brian also makes regular appearances on Chad Millman's podcast on ESPN.com.

On Dec. 26 of 2009, Brian beat every member of the national media to the news of Urban Meyer's resignation as the head football coach at the University of Florida. Of course, Meyer changed his mind the next day, but VI was the website that provided that stunning news first. Also, Brian alerted bettors to the pending suspensions of 20 FSU football players prior to the Music City Bowl in '07, suggesting that gamblers immediately play Kentucky -1 because the line was going to be heavily adjusted. As it turned out, Brian advised VI readers to then come back with FSU +9 (the adjusted number) so when the 'Cats won by seven, the perfect 'middle' gave gamblers multiple winners.

Brian hosted VI's radio show, The Power Hours, on Thursday nights from 2005-2012.

Brian is a life-long fan of the Florida Gators, Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Hawks and the Atlanta Falcons.

Brian is also a big fan of Steve Spurrier, Charles Barkley, the Van Gundys, Bill Raftery, Hannah Storm and Erin Andrews. On the flip side, Brian is not a big fan of Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, Kobe Bryant, Bobby Bowden and all Dookies including Coach K.

Most offshore books sent out odds for several UFC 202 bouts this past weekend. 5Dimes opened Demian Maia as a -130 favorite vs. Carlos Condit, who is coming off a split-decision loss to Robbie Lawler that remains a prime candidate for Fight of the Year honors.

The number on Maia quickly shot up to -185, but it was back down at -130 one-half hour later and remained there Monday afternoon. 'The Natural Born Killer' is available at a -110 price.

Maia will bring a five-fight winning streak into the Octagon to face Condit, who is currently ranked fifth in the loop. The third-ranked Maia is off a third-round submission win over Matt Brown at UFC 198.

Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson is first in line for the next shot at the belt currently held by Robbie Lawler, who defends his strap in the UFC 201 main event at Philips Arena in Atlanta on July 30. The Condit-Maia winner will be next on the doorstep of a shot at the welterweight championship.

The 202 show at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Aug. 20 will be headlined by McGregor-Diaz II. Conor McGregor's odds have moved from -115 or -120 up to -130 or -135 at most offshores in the last two weeks. Gamblers can get a +110 return on Nate at William Hill and a few other spots.

Diaz submitted 'The Notorious' in the second round of their first meeting at UFC 196. They will collide at welterweight again like the first encounter when Diaz took the fight on less than two weeks of notice.

Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone is fighting at 170 pounds for a third straight time on the main card of UFC 202. He is a -185 'chalk' against Rick 'The Horror' Story, who is the +145 underdog (risk $100 to win $145). The total is 2.5 rounds shaded heavily to the 'over,' which sparks my interest in the 'under' for a +140 return.

Cerrone has won back-to-back fights at welterweight since moving up after his loss to Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight strap at UFC Orlando last December. He has bagged a pair of Performance of the Night bonuses in wins over Alex Oliveira by first-round submission and Patrick Cote via third-round TKO.

Will Muschamp announced Tuesday that senior linebacker Skai Moore will miss the 2016 season and undergo neck-infusion surgery this Friday. Moore, who considered leaving school early for the 2016 NFL Draft, will be redshirted and return for the 2017 campaign unless he elects to go pro.

The latter scenario seems unlikely, especially given that he decided to come back when he was healthy. Moore will need to prove to NFL scouts that he's still the same player after surgery. The procedure will keep him out of contact drills for six months.

Moore has led the Gamecocks in tackles three years in a row. In 2015, he had 111 tackles, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, two sacks and four passes broken up. He was the catalyst in a season-opening win over North Carolina by a 17-13 count, producing three interceptions. Two of those picks came in the end zone, including a game-clinching interception in the final minute.

South Carolina now returns only four starters from a defense that finished last in the SEC in 2015. With this injury, Phil Steele dropped USC from No. 100 to No. 108 in his team experience rankings for 2016.

Muschamp told the media assembled in SanDestin on Tuesday at the SEC annual spring meetings, "He'll be fine. This is not a career-threatening situation. This is a very common procedure for a herniated disc. It’s unfortunate that it didn’t heal on its own.”

South Carolina opens the season at Vanderbilt on Sept. 1 in a Thursday night game. 5Dimes has the Gamecocks listed as 2.5-point favorites over the Commodores.
