The gorgeous rumor that's existed for more than a week is no longer a rumor.
Dana White told a Cleveland radio host earlier today that Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone vs. 'Ruthless' Robbie Lawler is signed to happen on the main card at UFC 205 in New York City at Madison Square Garden.
Wow! This is a thrilling matchup.
Cerrone has won three consecutive fights since moving up to the welterweight loop after losing a lightweight championship bout to Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Orlando last December. Cerrone took an eight-fight winning streak into that fight, so he's 11-1 in his last 12 Octagon appearances.
Cerrone became the first fighter to score a TKO win over Patrick Cote and Rick Story in his last two outings. He has looked outstanding at 170 pounds.
Lawler owns an 8-2 record in his second tour of duty in the UFC. He won the welterweight title by defeating Johny Hendricks by split decision at UFC 181 on Dec. 6 of 2014. He successfully defended his strap twice with wins over Rory MacDonald and Carlos Condit.
His fifth-round KO win over MacDonald at UFC 189 in one of the best fights in mixed martial arts history. Lawler got the split-decision nod over Condit at UFC 195 back in January. Then at UFC 201 in Atlanta, Lawler lost his belt when he was KO'd by Tyron Woodley just 2:12 into the opening round.
I would think Lawler will be a super-short favorite, probably in the -125/-130 range. The only other confirmed bout on the Nov. 12 card is Al Iaquinta vs. Thiago Alves. Two other rumored bouts are Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez (main event for lightweight title) and Chris Weidman vs. Yoel Romero in a middleweight scrap.
