College basketball cruised into Upset City this afternoon with top-ranked Kansas and second-ranked Kentucky, the lone once-beaten teams remaining, went down in conference road games. KU lost at Oklahoma St., while the 'Cats lost at Tennessee.
We still have K-St. in action against Missouri tonight, in addition to Villanova at Syracuse. Before those results are in, here's who I'm thinking gets into the Sweet 16 (for now).
In no particular order...
Kansas Kansas St. Cornell Kentucky Vandy Maryland Duke No. Iowa West Va. Villanova Syracuse UConn Michigan St. Wisconsin Xavier Ohio St.
Final Four sleepers: Xavier and UConn
Quick Jumpers:
--Two teams that could pull a Kansas '88 (Danny Manning) or 'Cuse '03 (Carmelo Anthony) are Ohio St. (Evan Turner) and Maryland (Greivis Vasquez). In other words, Turner and Vasquez are good enough to carry their teams on a six-game winning streak. To be clear, way more bullish on Turner and Ohio St., but Vasquez's offensive skills allow him to completely control a game scoring and passing when he really gets it going (like in the second half of this past week's comeback win vs. Clemson)
--If Cornell wins tonight, it becomes the first entrant in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.
--Again, I repeat: Kentucky is NOT going to the Final Four. Trust me.
All-SEC, First-Team: John Wall (Kentucky) DeMarcus Cousins (Kentucky) Devan Downey (South Carolina) Jarvis Varnado (Mississippi St.) Trey Thompkins (Georgia)
Second-Team All-SEC: Tasmin Mitchell (LSU) Chris Warren (Ole Miss) Patrick Patterson (Kentucky) Jermaine Beal (Vandy) Jeffery Taylor (Vandy)
Third-Team All-SEC: Wayne Chism (Tennessee) Chandler Parsons (Florida) Travis Leslie (Georgia) J.P. Prince (Tennessee) Erving Walker (Florida)
Fourth-Team All-SEC: Dee Bost (Mississippi St.) Terrico White (Ole Miss) A.J. Ogilvy (Vandy) Courtney Fortson (Arkansas) Kenny Boynton (Florida)
SEC All-Freshman Team: John Wall (UK) DeMarcus Cousins (UK) Kenny Boynton (UF) Marshawn Powell (ARK) John Jenkins (VANDY)
