In this week's installment of what I did right and what I did wrong this week, highlights games that slipped away and games that were won on just plain luck.
I guess we'll start at the beginning of the week, with the "World Champion" St. Louis Cardinals getting swept in a two-game home series against the Pirates. Albert Pujols up in the bottom of the 9th, down one run, bases loaded, drama...foul out to 3rd, ballgame.
The Reds have a 2-1 lead going into the 8th against the Astros, bullpen implodes, giving up six runs in the final two innings. Thank you for playing.
The Cardinals (again), leading 5-4 in the 8th at the Giants, with Barry Bonds at the plate. There are three options here - walk him, walk him, or hit him. Tony LaRussa decides to go with option D and pitch to him, Bonds goes yard, and the Giants win in extra innings.
Twins come back from a 2-1 deficit to score five runs against the Mariners. Good. Except if you had the run-line. Raul Ibanez takes Pat Neshek deep for a three-run shot. Minnesota wins 6-5 (not good enough).
Now, the breaks.
Astros and Brewers tied at 2 on Friday night, Craig Biggio hits his first grand slam since before the strike, Houston takes a 6-2 lead. Prince Fielder knocks out a 3-run homer against gascan Brad Lidge, but the Stros hold on 6-5, moneyline winner.
White Sox and Tigers combine for nine runs going into the bottom of the 7th Friday, need no more runs, got no more runs. Thankfully.
Finally, even though I didn't take this game, A-Rod going yard for a walk-off against the Indians, how upset are you if you had the Tribe, leading by 4 runs with two outs in the 9th and nobody on?
Moral of today's story, everything does even out, even if we don't think it does.
