What does it take to be successful in sports betting? What a loaded question.
I have been betting sports professionally for 30 years and have learned a ton, mostly the hard way. Life is a great teacher. There are no mistakes only lessons learned, I have learned plenty. I firmly believe you can learn from your mistakes or you can learn from someone who has been doing it for a very long time with success. The good news is I almost always learn. I have gone from the world’s worst sports bettor to having won sports handicapping contests in Las Vegas.
I feel a number of skills are needed to be successful namely Patience, Discipline, Money Management skills and the ability to shop and recognize Value. Before you BET it make sure you GET it. I am talking about being very selective and finding real value. It is not how many you play it is how many you win. A little advantage goes a long way. Discipline is critically important. Unsuccessful sports bettors bet with emotion allowing their heart to get in the way of making good money betting sports. The key is to remove emotion from your decision making altogether. Easier said than done. Know what you are good at and stay away from what you are not.
I know nothing about soccer. I have never bet on a soccer game and never will. I do bet every day as I see value and opportunity every day. Remember they play the Star Spangled Banner every day. This goes back to being selective. Pick your spots, spot your picks and never pick your nose.
Let’s talk Major League Baseball, specifically totals. The San Diego Padres have been a dead UNDER team having gone Under twice as many times as going Over. The Boston Red Sox with their lack of offense have also been a good Under team as have the Atlanta Braves. Red Rover Red Rover let’s look at the OVER. Two teams stand out, the Chicago White Sox and the Miami Marlins. Buyer Beware moving forward as the sports books have an uncanny knack to balance the scale and the line on these games will reflect past performance.
Once again the key to successful sports betting is to see it before it happens.
Until next week I will leave with the words of my ex wife who said to me “Good luck and Good bye”.
