When I started writing this I was full of rage and disapointment. I actually had almost a page of of moaning and groaning regarding the last place finish of Big Brown in the Belmont Stakes. Then I realized that why should I be like every other writer in the country jumping on the band wagon of defeat.
I have to look and remember how this animal captured the hearts and souls of everyone in this country. How even people who don't make a single wager all year bet $2.00 just so they could be a part of of this great animal. He brought out more stories that brought tears to our eyes and for a short 5 week period we all got together and hoped and prayed he would win the triple crown so we could say we saw it.
We were there. We weren't concerned about the money we would win, we new he would pay nothing but we still wanted to be a part of it. So many times we were disapointed by a nose, a bad ride, or just a tired horse. We were sure this was the one. Yet we all saw that this horse is only human. You can go so long and so far on guts but eventually something has to give way. I think we saw a tired horse and even after he was pulled up he tried to keep running as to say no I don't want to disappoint anyone.
Well let me be the first to say Thank You for putting all my problems behind me even if it was only for five weeks. I was taken by this animal and I hope we get the honor to see him run again. As I sit here and write this with a tear in my eye and say how nice it was to be part of an event that captured the whole world. We should all wish at some point in our lives we could make the whole world come together like this horse did. How easy it is to thrive on the negatives. How about all the positives that came with it...Jerry Sessa
