Another college week is in the books, and here’s a rundown on some of the action from this past Saturday.
Connecticut lost a heartbreaker at home, and lost their starting QB in the process. Zach Frazer will be out at least two weeks with a knee injury… West Virginia was impressive in a second half demolition of East Carolina. The Mountaineers ended up with a whopping 509-237 yardage edge and Jarrett Brown threw for 334 yards. WVU also lost four turnovers in this contest, so this could well have been a massacre… Central Michigan was flat out better than Michigan State and deserved to win the game. The Chippewas won the yardage battle by more than 100, and QB Dan LeFevour had a monster day in the upset… Northwestern appeared to be on its way to a romp, leading Eastern Michigan 21-0 midway through the second quarter. The Wildcats apparently put it on cruise control after that, and nearly blew the game, needing a late FG just to pull out the win… Iowa State got destroyed in their annual rivalry duel with Iowa, and two Cyclone QB’s combined to throw a whopping five picks in the defeat… Gus Malzahn is working his offensive magic yet again. Auburn rolled for nearly 600 yards as the crushed Mississippi State. The Bulldogs also showed some offensive life in their new scheme, but not enough to stay close… Army won all the stats against Duke, but the Blue Devils made their yards count as they scored a rare road win. Duke was 2-26 away from Durham prior to this win… Wisconsin was very fortunate to escape with a 2OT win over Fresno State. The Badgers were +3 in the turnover department as they avoided the upset… Stanford looked to be in command at Wake Forest but let it get away. The Cardinal blew a 17-0 lead as the Demon Deacons rallied to score an important home win… South Carolina looked like the better team in a wild battle with Georgia but the Bulldogs made a huge defensive stand at the end of the game to pull out a win… Tennessee went back into 2008 mode in losing at home to UCLA. QB Jonathan Crompton was awful, amassing only 93 yards through the air while being intercepted three times… I’ve gotten used to seeing the ball almost always bounce the right way for Buffalo but the Bulls were the team making the mistakes this time. Pittsburgh enjoyed a +4 win in the turnover battle en route to their win… TCU had zero trouble in beating Virginia. The Frogs led 30-0 before allowing a couple of meaningless scores and they completely dominated the stat sheet… Hawaii absolutely annihilated hapless Washington State, running out to a 35-0 lead before the Cougars made the final tally a little more respectable. Greg Alexander had a career day for the winners, throwing for 453 yards against what may well be the worst secondary in college football… Indiana held off Western Michigan and the Hoosiers helped themselves with a +3 in the turnover differential category… Missouri was in a fog early against Bowling Green and looked like they were headed to an upset loss. The Tigers didn’t pack it in, however, and roared back with three big second half scores for the narrow win… UTEP is off to a disastrous start. The Miners had high hopes entering the new season, but gave away their opener and then got obliterated by Kansas on Saturday. The Jayhawks just killed UTEP in this game, winning the stats by a monstrous margin… Southern Mississippi somehow only won by seven points despite a whopping 409-194 edge in yards. Give Central Florida credit for hanging in despite being badly outplayed… Tulsa had a party in their romp at New Mexico. This was a slaughter, with the Golden Hurricane enjoying a mind blowing 539-171 edge in yardage. The Lobos got their only TD on a 92-yard fumble return, so this could have been even worse than it was… Middle Tennessee State blew out Memphis on the stat sheet, and only a late score by the Tigers kept it from being a total humiliation.
