If the Bullshit College System (BCS) had its championship game on tap this weekend, we’d have, of course, Florida vs. Texas for all the mythical marbles. Actually, Florida and Alabama are running 1-2 in the polls, so technically, they’d play one another. But since the Gators and Crimson Tide are in the same conference, only one gets to play in the big game. Regardless, the team that is most deserving of being in the title game would be relegated elsewhere. That team would be TCU.
You’re free to consider whatever team you like as the best in the land. To resurrect a point I’ve made about 10,000 times already, the only place to actually decide the genuine winner is on the field. If I want to insist that UNLV is the best team in the country, I’m free to do so. It’s just an opinion and shouldn’t count for anything more than that. And no, I’m not being serious about actually believing that UNLV is the best team in the country.
Fact is, I don’t think TCU is the best team in the land. But based on the BCS stance that their title game matches up the two teams that have accomplished the most throughout the regular season, the Horned Frogs absolutely deserve to be participating in the biggest of the bowls. The evidence is irrefutable. And according to what’s actually taken place on the field, they ought to be playing Alabama.
TCU has three wins over teams currently residing in the Top 25. They won at Clemson, and destroyed both BYU and Utah. Among the other unbeaten entries, Alabama has two wins over Top 25 squads, knocking off Virginia Tech and LSU. The rest of the perfect teams have just one win each over current Top 25 teams.
And please spare me the argument about how life is so tough in the rugged SEC and that those teams have to go through wars every weekend. Really? Florida has wins over Charleston Southern, Troy, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State. Tennessee, Arkansas, South Carolina and Georgia are all decent, but they sure aren’t great. The Gators have one win over a Top 25 team, that being LSU. Oh wait, I nearly forgot the epic battle the Gators have on tap this weekend, as they host dangerous Florida International.
Don’t get me wrong, the SEC is the best league in the land. But defenders of the current system keep barking about how brutal the scheduling is for their teams. Yes, it’s tough. But there has to be a penalty for scheduling ALL cupcakes out of conference, and Florida is not paying that tariff. Neither is Texas, despite the fact they managed to make sure their three non-conference tilts were against such stalwarts as UL-Monroe, Wyoming and UTEP. Wow, how did the Longhorns ever manage to get through that Murderer’s Row?
I am well aware this argument will fall on deaf ears as far as changing the minds of those who are utterly convinced that SEC winner/Texas is the right pairing for the final game of the season. My reply to them? Prove it. Show me which wins by Florida and Texas override the body of work put together by TCU. It can’t be done.
