Maybe its the 110 degree heat here in Las Vegas, but I find myself going through the summer-time blues once again. This is one of the worst times of year to be a sports fan or gambler. July along with mid-February are horrific times on the sporting calander.
This time of year sucks unless you can get your gambling fix on a baseball regular season that still has three months to go, or that always coveted WNBA schedule. Don't even get me started on watching or wagering on NASCAR, golf or tennis.
Things were so bad on Wednesday that I watched Telemundo (Spanish television) to check out the Argentina-Mexico soccer game in the Copa America semifinals. Just for the record, my Spanish is about as solid as Andruw Jones' current batting average with the Braves.
Usually boxing or the Ultimate Fighting Championship can offer some relief during the slow periods, but the octagon will be shut down until late August. However, there will be four major cards from August 25 to September 22, but that doesn't help me right now.
Even my UFC fix took a bit of a hit this week when the highly anticipated dream matchup between Chuck 'The Iceman' Liddell and Wanderlei 'The Axe Murderer' Silva was called off. This fight was supposed to take place at UFC 76 in Anaheim, California.
I'm not even that excited about the Bernard Hopkins-'Winky' Wright fight July 21 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The combined age of the two fighters is 77 years, and Wright is a notorious defensive specialist.
Hopkins is well past his prime, but he remains one of my favorite sports figures to interview. The 'Executioner' can fill up a notebook with just one question and is usually very entertaining. However, I will not be covering the fight for VegasInsider.com with another writer getting the assignment.
I guess I could get my sports fix with the Vegas Summer League, which tells you how slow the sports calendar is right now. One of the few bright spots is that college and pro football is just around the corner. Don't know if you've seen it yet, but VI is already breaking down the top-25 for college football. I have been watching the NFL Network, Classic Sports and Fox Sports whatever for any football replays to get me through the heat.
