Las Vegas is a pretty cool place to live, especially when there's a big event in town. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has grown by leaps and bounds the four years I've been covering it. Fight fans were lined up through the Mandalay Bay today just for the weigh-ins, with the line extending a couple of football fields before the doors opened.
Nobody would have predicted this matchup for the heavyweight championship earlier this year. Couture was retired, and Gonzaga was facing the best striker in the UFC, Mirko 'Cro Cop.' If you would have said before the Gonzaga-'Cro Cop' fight that it would end with a headkick, 99 percent of the people would guess the Croatian delivered the finishing shot. The other one percent would have been drinking Mickey's fine malt liquor, the official beer of the UFC.
Big events also bring out the best in people, and there's a great website if you're interested in signed mixed martial arts gear from UFC fighters. Anything from fighter's shorts and gloves, to signed posters and even a World Extreme Cagefighing championship belt. All the proceeds go to the Ryan Bennett Family Benefit Fund.
Bennett was a pioneer in the mixed martial arts community as an announcer during the early years of the UFC. Unfortunately he passed away last year in an auto accident, leaving behind a wife and four children. Check out the Ryan Bennett Family Benefit Fund for a good cause and a chance to score some incredible MMA items.
