You may have noticed the green dots on some NFL player's helmets this season. Well technology's to blame, and it strikes me as kind of funny from a league that has uniform police and fines players for such indiscretions as lowered socks.
Players with the green dots on their helmets are equiped with radio receivers, and only one green dot is allowed per huddle. Those players will be in direct contact with coaches either on the sideline or up in the booth. That means that usually the quarterback and middle linebacker will have the dots on their helmets. The dots are easy to spot for the referees, and can throw a flag if two dots or more are on the same team.
The NFL is also going with captain patches this year that have a huge C along with four stars below. The league has never done this before, but three teams (1983 Dallas Cowboys, 1992 San Diego Chargers and 1994 New England Patriots) did have a C on their captains jerseys. Those earlier players looked like so many hockey captains skating around the ice.
