The atmosphere inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena for Saturday's 'Undefeated' matchup between 'Pretty Boy' Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Ricky 'Hitman' Hatton was electric. The crowd was easily 90 percent British, who were fired up their entire stay in Las Vegas.
They backed Hatton at the sportsbook and inside the arena, singing British songs in between downing numerous alcoholic beverages. There was even a four-piece band that had fans bellowing 'War Ricky Hatton' to the tune of Winter Wonderland.
I was pretty impressed with their enthusiasm of the fight fans, but I was pretty disappointed when they booed during the American national anthem. Now I have never been accused of being overly patriotic, but that was pretty bush league from the British.
So I have two things to tell all the English fans who were booing the American national anthem before the Mayweather-Hatton fight. 1. If it wasn't for Americans, you would be speaking German right now. 2. Good luck in Euro2008.
I also thought it was kind of odd that Mayweather came out to Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA.' It was meant to be an F you to the British fans, but the song is actually about the American government's mistreatment of Vietnam veterans. That's a common misperception of that song being pro-USA. The worst use of that song was by then President Ronald Regan for his 1984 re-election campaign.
