Covering the UFC Fight Night 12 last night got me to thinking about stupid nicknames in fighters and sports teams in general. In the headlining event, there's a mixed martial artist named Josh 'The People's Champion' Burkman. Granted there have been a ton of bad nicknames, but that one is horrible.
There are a couple NBA nicknames that are also horrendous. The Los Angeles LAKERS and Utah JAZZ have to be the two worst team names in American sports. Yes, I realize that the Lakers came from Minnesota and the Jazz from New Orleans, but change the name. How many lakes are there in Los Angeles, and how much Jazz is played in conservative Utah? None.
However, there is too much history with both teams to change nicknames now, especially with the Lakers winning numerous NBA titles. The Tennessee Oilers were in this group a few years ago after moving from Houston. However, that franchise did the smart thing and changed their moniker to the Titans.
Guess the Lakers and Jazz will just have to stick with their stupid nicknames, like the People's Champion.
