Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. --Albert Einstein
The famous Albert Einstein quote explains college football's Bowl Championship Series perfectly. It is an imperfect system that is doomed to fail as long as it is in place. The only real logical solution to this situation is a playoff, a format used in every other major sporting event.
It seems like every year another scenario plays out that leaves one team sitting on the sideline. No matter how many teams you select, some schools will feel left out. Texas is on the outside looking in despite beating Oklahoma in head-to-head action on a neutral field.
March Madness continues to expand, moving to 65 teams and still some teams complain about getting left out. The best scenario for college football is to keep the bowl games intact, they make a ton of money for their local economies and are loaded with tradition.
Have the current four BCS games (Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange) become a playoff between conference winners of the Pac-10, Big Ten, SEC, Big XII, ACC, Big East and a pair of wild cards from a 'power' conference or an undefeated mid-major squad such as a Utah or Boise State. Some teams will always feel left out, but at least the championship will be decided on the field.
