I was excited to see Time Wakefield coming back to Pittsburgh tonight and when he takes the mound he should receive a warm welcome from the fans for this two years of work. As a rookie in 1992 he was the driving force to sealing the deal and winning the NL East....... During the playoffs, he started two games against the Braves and won them both. Unfortunately he wasn't the game seven starter. Doug Drabek was the starter then and actually pitched very well throughout but ran into trouble in the ninth.................
When I saw Wakefield starting this weekend, all I could think about why Bucs manager Jim Leyland didn't bring in Bob Walk instead of Stan Belinda. They needed ground balls to get out of the jam and Belinda was a flyball pitcher who at times that year was a gas can instead of a fireman...........Bob Walk was the perfect pitcher to get the ground balls, and he was even warming up, but Belinda got the nod and the rest was history............Barry Bonds make a weak throw home that couldn't get out a slow-footed Sid Bream, Braves win and go to the World Series.......I honestly believe Pittsburgh would have won the Series with Tim Wakefield likely getting three starts......
Wakefield was magical that year..............
Since then, the Pirates haven't been back to the playoffs or even sniffed a .500 season which is why this season has been pretty exciting even though there is no expectations of making the playoffs.
