At the Gate - Sunday
February 16, 2013
By Mike Dempsey
Royal Delta, the two-time defending of the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic makes her 2013 debut Sunday at Gulfstream Park in the Grade 3 Sabin.
The Bill Mott trainee is the 2-5 morning line favorite in a field of five, and the mare will be looking to run better than she did last year when she checked in second in the Sabin, beaten by Awesome Maria.
All indications are the mare is coming into this race tighter than last year, although she will have to contend with Grace Hall (3-1), who won three of seven starts last year including the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks.
Her trainer Tony Dutrow has solid numbers with horses coming off the sidelines, but admitted this week that his filly may not be fully cranked for her first start off a 3 ½ month break.
The others in the compact field are One Last Dance (20-1), All of Thee (8-1) and My Pal Chrissy (6-1).
It is not much of a betting race, but it will be interesting to see how Royal Delta starts off her year. Her goals this year include the Group 1 Dubai World Cup and possibly the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic, and she would be taking on the boys in both of those races.
Today’s feature at Aqueduct is the $75,000 Dearly Precious, which drew a field of six three year old fillies, each looking for their first stakes win.
The morning line favorite is the Kiaran McLaughlin trained Elghayoor (2-1), who was the runner up in both of her starts in the maiden ranks and takes on winners for the first time while adding Lasix.
The Rudy Rodriguez trained Kiss the Lady (3-1) figures to take some betting action off her runner up finish in the Ruthless Stakes on Jan. 12.
With both of today’s stakes offering less than stellar betting opportunities, today’s featured races below are a couple of maiden races that offer a good opportunity for us to pad our bankroll.

Here is today’s opening from Aqueduct to get the day off to a good start:
AQU Race 1 Clm $12,500N2L (12:30 ET)
4 Langsyne 4-1
2 The Winged Venus 6-1
7 Bluegrass Rumor 2-1
1 Proud Dame 5-1
Analysis: Langsyne stretches out to a route after making a mild late rally to finish third last out going six furlongs over an inner track that was strongly playing to inside speed. There is not much speed signed up and three back this gal battled for the early lead going two turns at Philly versus $16,000 starter allowance foes before weakening to finish third. The Rice barn is 19% winners moving runners from sprint to route.
The Winged Venus came with a five wide rally to fifth last out at this level, also catching a racing strip that was playing to inside speed, six runners that day went gate to wire. It does not look as if she should be as far back against this group which should put her in a good spot as they head for home. Decent value if she goes off near her 6-1 morning line.
WIN: #4 to win at 3-1 or better.

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Aqueduct:
AQU Race 7 Md Sp Wt (3:18 ET)
5 She's Stones Sis 4-1
9 Riptherubberoff 3-1
7 Discreet Force 12-1
4 Love Scat 8-1
Analysis: She's Stones Sis was sent off at 4-1 in her debut last December in a field of eight against state bred $50,000 maiden claimers where she finished evenly in a fourth place finish in the mud. She caught an off track that was playing to inside speed that day. The fifth place finisher Maggiesfreuddnslip came back to break her maiden in her next outing for a $50,000 tag on Jan. 19. The barn has been on fire at the meeting and hits at a 19% clip with second out maidens. The filly has some pedigree, by Giant's Causeway out of a mare that has dropped four winners, top earner stakes winner Bustin Stones ($480,150).
Riptherubberoff was part of a three way speed duel last out and could not match strides late with the winner and had to settle for the runner up spot as the beaten chalk. Two back she battled for the early lead and weakened to finish fourth behind repeat winner Keep Bustin, who came back to beat state bred Alw-1 optional claimers in her next outing on Jan. 11. She makes her third start of her current form cycle and the RRod barn has been very live at the meeting, picking up a couple of wins on yesterday's card.
WIN: #5 to win at 3-1 or better.

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Gulfstream Park:
GP Race 8 Md Sp Wt (4:05 ET)
5 Cappachino Gal 10-1
8 Iroquois Girl 5-2
3 Makayla's Angel 6-1
2 Make It Anywhere 4-1
Analysis: Cappachino Gal is an $85,000 Ocala purchase making her debut for the Fawkes barn that is 16% winners with first time starters. The filly is by Bluegrass Cat (13% winners with debut runners) out of a Purple Mountain mare that has dropped three foals to race, all winners, top earner Grade 1 winner Pico Central ($1.2 million). This gal is working as if she has some talent.
Iroquois Girl prompted the early pace and was no match for the winner late in a runner up finish last out in her first go off a three month break. She owns solid early and mid pace numbers and if she moves forward a couple of lengths second off the bench she will be right in the mix here. She has six sibs that are winners including a pair of stakes winners, top earner Salty Strike ($485,266). The Nicks barn is 26% winners (with a +ROI) with runners making their second start off a 45-180 day layoff.
WIN: #5 to win at 9-2 or better.
EX: 5,8 / 2,3,5,8
TRI: 5,8 / 2,3,5,8 / 2,3,5,7,8
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
