INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) - Charlie Em defeated 1-2 favorite Scarlet Strike by a head to win the $100,500 Senorita Stakes in her U.S. debut at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday.
Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Charlie Em ran 1 mile on the turf in 1:35.18 and paid $21.40, $6.20 and $4.60 at 9-1 odds. Gomez won the Senorita for the third time.
Scarlet Strike returned $2.20 and $2.10 after running wide throughout the race under high weight of 121 pounds. Kyriaki was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third and paid $4.20 to show.
Charlie Em was making her first start for trainer Paddy Gallagher. The 3-year-old filly had been idle since finishing third in a $25,700 stakes in Hanover, Germany, last November.
``It took her a little while, but she came around in the last five weeks,'' Gallagher said. ``She got rid of her winter coat and started acting and training nice. She breezed a couple of times on the grass here and seemed to go nice.''
The victory, worth $60,000, increased Charlie Em's career earnings to $76,678, with four wins in nine starts for the Britain-bred filly.
In the $71,850 Came Home Stakes, Let Em Shine defeated Broadway Empire by 4 3/4 lengths for his third straight win.
Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Let Em Shine ran seven furlongs on Cushion Track in 1:21.65 and paid $4.20, $2.80 and $2.20 as the 11-10 favorite.
Broadway Empire returned $4.40 and $2.60, and Treasury Bill was another length back in third and paid $2.20 to show.
Let Em Shine has three wins in four starts by a combined 16 1/2 lengths. He has career earnings of $116,910.
``I think by far he's the fastest horse out of the gate that I've ridden and the fastest all around,'' Maldonado said.
