The Drawing Away Stable claimed the gelding Saginaw, then a six-year-old, for $30,000 on March 8 of last year out of a victory where he drew away to win by 13 ¼ lengths.
Trainer David Jacobson is known to be adept at the claim box, but I do not think even he could have envisioned what has occurred since. The gelding won his first four starts for the barn including a pair of state bred stakes.
His winning streak ended when he was placed in the Met Mile (G1), and then after getting beaten 24 ¼ lengths in that outing, he came back to win his next three starts.
The gelding has now started 17 times for the connections and he has visited the winner’s circle an amazing 14 times, 10 of those wins coming in stakes company.
Drawing Away Stable and Jacobson have turned a $30,000 investment into $713,000, and there seems to be no stopping this gelding.
As a New York bred, the connections can keep clobbering state breds, or with five triple digit Beyers since the claim, he could also be competitive in open company. He made 14 starts last year and has shown durability.
If Jacobson can keep him together this year and next, he could end up going down as one of the best claims in history.
It will be tough to get to Lava Man status. Doug O’Neill claimed Lava Man for $50,000 and he went on to win more than $2.5 million for the barn.
Speaking of bankrolls, ours took a hit yesterday , and we also had a few too many scratches. We should rebound this afternoon as I like Friday’s card.
Here is today’s opening race from Saratoga to get the day off to a good start:
SAR Race 1 Clm $25,000B (1:00 ET) 9 Eriugena 3-1 4 Kiss of Thunder 5-2 8 Sky Lover 7-2 7 Knock Quietly 8-1
Analysis: Eriugena made a good late run to finish in the runner up spot last out against $30,000 non-winners of two at Delaware Park in his first go off a two month break. The gelding did not get much pace to run at and he should here. The winner of the race was Soup d'Coupe, who came back to beat Alw-1 company in his next outing on July 20 at Delaware Park. Prado takes over and this guy does not need to move forward all that much off his last effort to win here.
Kiss of Thunder is back on turf after checking in eighth last out on the main track at Churchill Downs versus Alw-1 foes. The gelding broke his maiden for a $30,000 tag at Gulfstream Park back in March and has beaten winners, taking an off the turf $30,000 non-winners of two in the slop three back. He looks well spotted here dropping back in for a tag for the Maker barn.
WIN: #9 to win at 2-1 or better.
EX: 4,9 / 4,7,8,9
TRI: 4,9 / 4,7,8,9 / 4,6,7,8,9
Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:
SAR Race 6 The Sportech Caress (3:41 ET) 8 Silverette 4-1 4 Spun Cap 7-2 1 Madame Giry 9-2 2 Sounds of the City 3-1
Analysis: Silverette makes her first career start on turf here for the Dale Romans barn that is 13% winners moving runners from dirt to turf. The filly has landed in the exacta in eight of her nine career start, all on dirt and picked up her first stakes win two back taking the Red Cross at Monmouth Park. She is bred to like turf, three of her sibs are turf winners including stakes winner Going Ballistic ($1.19 million). She put in a bullet drill over the Oklahoma training track on July 26 is an indication she will be able to handle the surface switch.
Spun Cap returns off a 2 1/2 month break after checking in seventh in The Very One at Pimlico. She was only beaten 3 1/2 lengths by the winner Sensible Lady, who came back to win the Buckland at Colonial Downs in her next outing and then most recently failed to fire as the favoring in the Royal North (G3) when shipped to Woodbine. The filly has won three of seven in her career on turf and ran well here last summer when third in the Coronation Cup which was her first go against winners. She is in a sharp barn and Rosario takes the call.
WIN: #8 to win at 3-1 or better.
EX: 4,8 / 1,2,4,8
TRI: 4,8 / 1,2,4,8 / 1,2,4,6,8
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
R1: #7 Knock Quietly 8-1
R2: #6 Momma’s Mark 8-1
R5: #4 Acquisition 12-1
R8: #4 Livingston Street 10-1
