It sure looked as if we were going to have a fun day on closing day at Belmont Park on Sunday as it seemed unlikely the Pick 6 as going to get hit after Stanwyck pulled off the upset in the Turnback the Alarm (G2).
The filly prevailed by a head and returned $44.80 and heading into the finale on the card there was only one horse that was covered in the Pick 6, 10-1 morning line longshot Precious Metal.
If any of the others in the field win the race, we are looking at a potential pot on Sunday that might have exceeded $2 million with a mandatory payout.
Instead, Precious Metal held on to win by a nose over late running Madam I’m Adam, returning $23.20 for the win. The one lucky ticketholder in the Pick 6 took home $523,036.
The winners in the Pick 6 sequence were Wicked Strong ($10.20), Joy Seeker ($7.60), Candyman E ($6.50), Clearly Now ($9.80), Stanwyck ($44.80), and Precious Metal ($23.30).
There still will be a mandatory payout in the Pick 6 on Sunday, but with no carryover, the pool figures to be on the light side, but may still be worth a small stab.
Keeneland ran its closing day card on Saturday and we saw an upset in the final graded stake of the fall meeting.
Nikki’s Sandcastle got the job done, returning $25.80 with 7-1 Winning Cause completing a $2 exacta that paid $208.00.
Racing in New York will be dark after Sunday, with the Aqueduct fall/winter meeting getting underway next Friday. That will give me a couple of extra days to work on my Breeders’ Cup Reports, which will be available by Thursday.
My Best Plays Report for Sunday includes my eight strongest plays from Belmont Park and Woodbine including the $1 million Canadian International (G1).

Analysis: Great Minds stalked the early pace, made a good middle move and battled on gamely late to miss picking up his diploma first out by just a neck. The third place finisher in the race was Mr. Speaker, who came back to graduate in his next outing on Oct. 14 here. The Mott barn usually does not have them fully cranked first time out and this guy should move forward with a race under his belt. He has three sibs that are winners including a pair of turf winners, top earner Regal Nurse ($246,561).
Uptown Joe stretches out to a route after a solid runner up finish in his debut going seven furlongs on the turf here. This guy has a decent turf pedigree, by War Front out of a Jump Start mare. The Kenneally barn is 29% winners (with a +ROI) with second out maidens. The colt was a $310,000 Ocala purchase, a solid number for a War Front runner
WIN: #10 to win at 5-2 or better.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:
BEL Race 8 The Awad (4:34 ET) 1 Mansion House 8-5 8 Storming Inti 5-2 3 Sonny Inspired 6-1 7 Cabo Cat 5-1
Analysis: Mansion House makes his U.S. debut here for the Clement barn that is 16% winners (with a +ROI) with overseas invaders. This colt is well bred, a half to five other turf winners and is coming off a good effort in a third place finish in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh, beaten 1 1/4 lengths for the top spot. He makes his first start off a three month break, but the barn is solid off the bench, hitting at a 22% clip with runners coming back off a 61-180 day layoff. He gets lasix for the first time and should have no problem handling the one mile distance.
Storming Inti was a game maiden winner last out in his second career start going long here on Sept. 28. The colt put in a good effort in his debut in a third place finish in a race that has now produced three next out winners. The winner of the race was Bashart, who came back to win the With Anticipation (G2) and then run second in the Bourbon (G3) at Keeneland in his most recent start. He is a logical contender here for the Brown barn.
WIN: #1 to win at 8-5 or better.

Today’s Featured Races of the Day from Woodbine:
WO Race 8 The E.P. Taylor G1 (4:38 ET) 10 Tannery 2-1 5 Moment in Time 12-1 4 Minakshi 3-1 2 Colonial Flag 4-1
Analysis: Tannery stalked the early pace toward the inside in the early going, came with a five wide run turning for home and rallied well for the runner up spot last out in the Flower Bowl (G1), beaten a half-length by Laughing, who was able to control things up front in a gate to wire score. The filly makes her third start of her current form cycle and she has handled ground with some give to it.
Moment in Time was not much of a threat in her last two starts overseas in Group1 company, last out a sixth in the Yorkshire Oaks where she was sixth behind the highly regarded The Fugue who is Breeders' Cup bound. Her best efforts where a win in a Group 3 and three back a good second in the Lancashire Oaks (G2). She gets lasix for the first time and is proven at the distance. Worth tossing in the mix here if we catch most of her 12-1 morning line.
WIN: #10 to win at 2-1 or better.
