At the Gate – Friday

It was confirmed yesterday by owner Rick Perter than Omaha Beach is headed to the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita.

The colt won the Santa Anita Sprint Championship (G1) which earned him a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1), but he will stretch out and go two turns in the Dirt Mile.

If you forgot, Omaha Beach was going to be the morning line favorite for the Kentucky Derby (G1) back in May. He was forced to scratch a few days before the race with a entrapped epiglottis.

The colt had won the Rebel (G2) and Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park in his two previous starts. The Arkansas Derby win was at 1 1/8 miles, and it would have been interesting to see the colt come back in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), but his connections feel he would have needed more than one six furlong sprint in seven months to handle the 1 ¼ miles of the Classic.

We have a couple of big cards coming up on Saturday. At Belmont Park we have Empire Showcase Day, an 11-race card that features eight stakes. We also will head out to my old stomping grounds at Laurel Park and I’ll include some of the stakes action from Maryland Million Day in Saturday’s Best Plays Report.

Now is the perfect time to purchase my Monthly Package. It gives you a month of Belmont Park Reports daily my Best Plays Report each Saturday and Sunday and my two-day Breeders’ Cup Report.

Here is the opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md $75,000 (1:15 ET)
#3 Road to Meach 9-2
#6 Teachable Moment 5-2
#9 Bebeau 5-1
#7 Duncastle 7-2

Analysis: Road to Meach

drops in for a tag for the first time here while making his turf debut He is 0 for 6 on dirt with two thirds. The $140,000 Keeneland purchase is out of a Dixie Union mare that has dropped three winners including one turf winner. Brown is 26% winners (with a +ROI) moving runners from dirt to turf. This is his second start off the bench and catches a pretty weak group.

Teachable Moment chased the early pace, got the lead briefly and could not match strides with the winner late in a runner up finish last out for this tag. He was making his first start off the claim by the Maker barn that took him for $50,000 two back at the Spa. He was a good second three back at 5 1/2 on turf and missed by a head at seven panels on the main track last summer. He gets a jock upgrade to Franco and a repeat of his last effort looks good enough to beat this group.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 3,6 / 3,6,7,9
TRI: 3,6 / 3,6,7,9 / 1,3,6,7,9

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 6 Alw $66,000N1X (4:05 ET)
#2 Preferred Outcome 10-1
#12 Three Outlaws 7-2
#5 Albie 8-1
#9 Nutzforboltz 4-1

Analysis: Preferred Outcome
is back on turf after checking in third last out at Finger Lakes on the main track. The winner of that race was Tribecca, who came back to win the state bred Lee Memorial in his next start at Finger Lakes on Oct. 7. The gelding is 0 for 3 on turf but has landed in the money in each of those outings. Two back at the Spa at this level he ran a decent second going 5 1/2 furlongs over good ground. The third-place finisher Bourbon Mission came back to win at this level in his next start here on Sept. 18. He picks up Lezcano who is having a good meeting and we should catch a decent price.

Three Outlaws stalked the early pace and came with a good late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out at this level. Brown claimed this guy two back for $25,000 out of a fifth-place finish versus non-winners of two. He graduated on the main track but two of his three trips on turf were decent and this guy appears to be heading in the right direction form wise.
