Horse Races Today: Sunday’s Gulfstream Park and OP Analysis & Odds

Horse Racing Action at TVG!
Longshot Soros gave us a bit of a thrill in yesterday’s Unbridled at Gulfstream Park at 21-1, prompting the early pace but he tired in the stretch as the betting favorite Dr Post got the job done, paying a puny $4.20.

We fared better in the stakes at Oaklawn Park. Long Weekend won the Bachelor as my top pick, returning $6.20. The Bob Baffert trained Eight Rings, who was sent off as the 4-5 favorite tossed in a real dud, tiring to finish fifth.

Our top pick in the Carousel was Mia Mischief, who really looked sharp drawing off to win by 4 ½ lengths and returning $5.00. My third choice Amy’s Challenge completed a $2 exacta that paid $24.00.

We definitely benefited from a tardy start by the betting favorite Bellafina, who after breaking a beat slow found herself last early. She came up with a wide bid to engage but did not show her usual punch in the stretch and had to settle for fourth. She was taken out of her game and will be worth a good look next time she runs.

We have another good card at Gulfstream Park on Sunday, 11 races with mostly large fields and several vulnerable favorites. The early Pick 5 looks as if it could end up paying nicely.

Gulfstream Park Opening Race of the Day - 4/26

GP Race 1 Clm $16,000 (12:55 ET)
#8 New York's Finest   4-1
#7 I'm Cardinal   3-1
#3 Oak Bluffs   5-2
#1 Earth   9-2

Analysis: New York's Finest tracked the early pace and weakened to finish fourth last out against $16,000 starter optional claimers in his first start off the claim by the Ramirez barn. The runner up Sturgeon came back to beat Alw-1 company in his next start on February 14. This guy was a sharp winner two back against $16,000 foes here, drawing off to win by 4 1/4 lengths. He returns off a 2 1/2 month freshening here and is back in for $16,000. He picks up Saez and figures to bounce back off his last outing.

I'm Cardinal pressed the early pace and weakened to finish third last out against Alw-1 optional claimers at Tampa Bay Downs, missing the place spot by a neck. Two back at the same level off a three month break he ran a decent third behind repeat winner Long Blade, who came back to beat Alw-2 optional claimers in his next outing at Tampa on March 11. The Baxter trainee drops back in for a straight tag here and has landed din the exacta in 5 of 7 trips on the turf here. He looks like a good fit here as he makes his third start of his current form cycle.

Gulfstream Park Featured Race of the Day - 4/26

GP Race 7 Clm $30,000 (3:53 ET)
#7 Traveling Gambler   7-2
#6 Uncaptured King   6-1
#2 K W Captain Hook   10-1
#8 Ain't Wasting Time   5-2

Analysis: Traveling Gambler stalked the early pace and made a mild late rally to finish in the runner up spot last out. It was his first start off a 3 1/2 month break here for the Plesa barn. The gelding has not won since breaking his maiden for a $50,000 tag in his debut here last June but faced tougher last year including a runner up fish in his third start versus Alw-1 optional claimers. He owns a solid pace profile throughout and looks capable of being more forwardly placed in this spot. A decent enough off track pedigree if the rains come.

Uncaptured King raced at the back of the pack early while saving ground and angled out four wide making a mild late run to finish third last out against $50,000 starter optional claimers in his first start off a three-month break. This guy beat $35,000 claimers three back which was his first start against winners. He looks capable of moving forward in his second start off the break and fits well in this spot going for a straight $30,000 tag.

Oaklawn Park Featured Race of the Day - 4/26

OP Race 8 Md Sp Wt (4:38 CT)
#3 Lil Miss Moppet   5-2
#12 Slime Queen   15-1
#11 Tipsy Gal   2-1
#5 Trapped N My Mind   6-1

Analysis: Lil Miss Moppet set the early fractions and got clear heading for home but got run down late and had to settle for the runner up spot, beaten a neck while 3 1/2 clear of the rest of the field, It was an improvement off an 11th place finish going 5 1/2 furlongs on turf at Santa Anita. The Miller trainee owns solid early and mid pace numbers and she looks capable of clearing this field and not looking back. She is by Uncle Mo out of a stakes placed Lawyer Ron mare that has dropped one winner.

Slime Queen cuts back from a route where last out in the slop here this gal dueled for the early lead and faded to finish seventh. She ran second in each of her first three career starts, one on synthetic and then two on turf, all going long. The hood comes off had she has had a couple of decent drills over the main track here. She has shown some ability and is going to be a generous price in this spot. The barn is 16% winners moving runners from route to sprint.

Live Longshots

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
