Horse Races Today: Thursday’s Gulfstream Park Analysis & Odds

Horse Racing Action at TVG!
After slumming it at Fonner Park and Will Rogers the past month and putting up with the endless post time drags at Gulfstream Park, horseplayers get a ray of sunshine as we had into the weekend.

Churchill Downs opens on Saturday for their spring meeting, three weeks late. In addition, Santa Anita is scheduled to open their meeting on Friday although as of Wednesday morning they are still waiting for the Los Angeles health Department to sign off on opening.

Golden Gate Fields did get the approval and racing resumes at the Northern California track on Thursday afternoon. After Friday’s Gulfstream Park card, I am moving my tack to Churchill Downs which should have an outstanding meeting.

The opening day card on Saturday includes 11 races with an average field size of 11.3. The first stakes action comes next Saturday with the $150,000 Matt Winn, a Road to the Kentucky Derby points race.

The headliner on Saturday’s card is Monomoy Girl, who makes her first start since winning the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) over the Churchill Downs main track.

The Brad Cox trainee suffered a case of colic last year and then a muscle strain that kept her on the sidelines. She has won 9 of her 11 career starts and has won three of her four starts over the Churchill Downs main track.

She goes in the fourth race on Saturday, a $80,000 optional claimer and she catches a pretty good group of fillies and mares. Among her foes are stakes winners Talk Veuve to Me and Fashion Faux Pas.

We have some rain in the forecast for this afternoon at Gulfstream Park, but it now looks as if it may stay away until at least mid afternoon so hopefully we will still be on the grass.

Here is the opening race from Gulfstream Park to get the day off to a good start:

Gulfstream Park Race 1 Analysis - 5/14

GP Race 1 Md $12,500 (1:00 ET)
#7 Josefa   9-2
#6 El Scorcho   3-1
#4 Matcha   7-2
#3 Silver Palms   12-1

Analysis: Josefa gets the call and it looks as if the weather may cooperate for a few hours for us to stick on the turf, hopefully. Our top pick pressed the early pace and tired to finish ninth last out against $25,000 foes. He was a decent fourth two back behind a pair of next out winners and three back made a mild late bid to check in third. The Sano trainee drops into a softer spot here. He is the first foal to race out of a Don Rigo mare.

El Scorcho came off a four month break last out for her second career start, dropping in for $50,000 She was outrun at 23-1 and takes the big plunge to the bottom level here for her third career start and second off the bench. The Servis barn is 24% winners with runners making their second start off a 45-180-day layoff. She is out of a Hennessy mare that has dropped four winners including one turf winner. She would still have a big shot if this comes off the turf, she is bred to handle a wet track.

Gulfstream Park Featured Race 8 Analysis - 5/14

GP Race 8 Clm $12,500 (4:46 ET)
#3 Don't Get Khozy   7-2
#4 Chit Chat Girl   8-1
#7 Napa Rules   3-1
#8 Fast Venezuela   4-1

Analysis: Don't Get Khozy raced next to last in the early stages and came with a good three wide move around the far turn, took over the lead in upper stretch and held on by a neck to win for this tag last out. It was her first win in nine trips over the main track here. She comes right back for the same tag here and Saez sticks. There is not a ton of pace signed up and she did get a great trip last out, but she looks to be heading in the right direction form wise and while she has never been on a wet track she is bred top and bottom to handle it.

Chit Chat Girl stalked the early pace from the outside and finished evenly in a third-place finish last out against $16,000 foes at Tampa Bay Downs last out. The runner up Diamond News came back to beat $25,000 non-winners of two in her next start while the winner Tipsy Again came back to miss by a nose against $16,000 non-winners of three in her next outing. This gal looks like a good fit here with her best and her 8-1 morning line looks more than fair.

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.
