Pyro wins Risen Star, stakes claim as one of top 3-year-old colts

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -Pyro staked his claim as one of the top 3-year-old colts in training Saturday at the Fair Grounds with a powerful victory in the Grade 3 $300,000 Risen Star Stakes, the final prep for the Louisiana Derby.

Last at the top of the stretch, Pyro angled out for running room under Shaun Bridgemohan and came roaring down the center of the track in the final furlong to win going away by two lengths over stablemate Z Fortune. Visionaire was another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Pyro paid $3.80, $2.60 and $2.20. Z Fortune returned $3.40 and $2.60, and Visionaire paid $3.60 to show.

In the 3-year-old filly division, Indian Blessing ran her lifetime undefeated streak to five races after refusing to load into the gate before the start of the Grade 3 $200,000 Silverbulletday Stakes.

The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner maintained her status at the top of her division although she gave her backers a bit of a scare in the final furlong. Breaking from the outside post, Indian Blessing chased long-shot Miss Missle through a quarter- mile in 23.87 and a half in 47.14 before jockey Garrett Gomez asked her to run approaching the far turn.

Indian Blessing quickly sprinted clear by 4 lengths held off fast-closing Proud Spell by a length. Highest Class was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third.

The Bob Baffert-trained filly by Indian Charlie covered 1 1-16 miles in 1:43.75 and paid $3.40, $2.20 and $2.10. Proud Spell returned $2.60 and $2.40, and Highest Class paid $3.00 to show.

Earlier, Grasshopper won the Grade 3, $150,000 Mineshaft Handicap for older horses at 1 1-16 miles. Jockey Robby Albarado sent the 4-year-old colt trained by Neil Howard through a narrow opening between horses in mid-stretch and drew clear to win by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:43.46. Silver Lord finished second, a head in front of Magna Graduate. Grasshopper paid $4.80, $2.80 and $2.20.
